So my 4yr old daughter is really into hunting Cape Buffalo right now, so I bought her Mark Sullivan's Death at my Feet. We just watched it and I was a bit shocked to see that Mike, not the client was dispatching most of the game. While my daughter liked the video, some of the shots that were taken didn't seem that ethical as well. 125+ shot with a double rifle off hand with no sticks,really? I guess I just wanted to weigh in here and see what everyone else thinks.

Your DEATH IN THE LONG GRASS was the book that started me hunting in Africa.
I must say that I have spent hundreds of enjoyable days in the African bush, all thanks to you.
But, this has cost me millions of dollars, and I was wondering if you can give me your address in the Happy Hunting Grounds where I can send my request for refund?
It is OK if you don't want to post your address on the Internet; in which case I will make sure I hand deliver this myself when I join you there.

It was Capstick, Ruark and Hemingway that sent me to Africa the first time, and Mark Sullivan who first piqued my curiosity about double rifles. Regardless of their respective merits,(or lack thereof), as writers, hunters, or even human beings, I remain forever in their debt!

Nicely said. Fortunately my dad had a big collection of African hunting books, so I'll add the fiction of Taylor as well.
Never really spotted Sullivan until I was already into it, when it was so bad it was really bad, unlike movies like Flash Gordon that were so bad they actually transcended and became good.

SkylineAs a young lad it was J.A.Hunter's books that got me focused on the dark continent. Of course that had something to do with my having met one of his family members.
Later I read the rest of them and of course found out that perhaps there was a great deal of literary licence used in their tales. The same can be said for other writers closer to home who focused on firearms or Alaska.
To me it is of little importance and I honestly do not know why so many seem to feel they have to beat up on the departed whenever the chance presents itself. Regardless of the accuracy of events depicted, their writings inspired many to seek adventure and because of that many lives have been enriched. That is good enough for me.

I don't really feel that anyone has "Beat Up" on PHC in this discussion. In the past there have been some really harsh discussions about PHC and Mark Sullivan, who I had not heard of departing this planet. While not having any real opinion about Sullivan, I do think Capstick did a lot to get folks interested in making a trip to Africa, and I have no problem with his living life on his terms.
I have noticed during my time on earth, that way too many folks have real problems concerning folks that don't subscribe to the status quo/march to the beat of a different drummer.

I posted this because, unlike many of you, I am not accustomed to Africa hunting. Plus my daughter is currently very interested in hunting in general with a particular liking to cape buffalo (in Tanzania). If it were me on one of these hunts, I would be pissed off if my PH took the kill shot just because he could.

NakihunterI know that hunting is not allowed in India anymore.
But in the off season you guys could visit the old hunting reserves of the maharajas and experience old India to a small extent.
Please feel free to go to the Asian hunting forum and look my latest post.
Yes, I know it is not hunting - but you just might get intersted enough to help in reviving hunting in India. Immagine 2 old traditional seasons in the year as a result of AR initiatives.
Far better than debating old topics like Sullivan & Capstics.
How about reviving even older traditions like Hunting in India!!!

Actually, Jim Shockey has hunted Africa extensively. Very extensively. Video's of his hunts there should be easy to find although I don't know the names of them right off. I would dig a bit deeper for your daughter if she is interested in Shockey's hunts as he has done some of the more unusual African hunts, not to mention that IMO he is a positive influence for our sport.

But I think on Most Dangerous Hunts, he takes a lion as well as hippo. He also gets charged by an elephant that Mike Fell stops the charge at close range. I'm wondering if he has some additional DVDs containing his more recent show episodes as I know he went back to Tanzania for another go at the elephant. I could be wrong however as I don't have that many of his DVDs, only that I've seen quite a few of his television shows.
Anyway, good luck with keeping your daughter interested in hunting. I find that I enjoy my boys hunting more than doing it myself these days. Keep passing it on!

They are a treasure trove of charges and close encounters that most PH's hope not to see. Me either. However it doesn't hurt to have an idea in your minds eye if it all goes to Hell in a hurry. I have hunted with a PH in Zim that cannot shoot. So maybe just maybe a split second of recognition on your part might be the difference between a good story and a long said phone call to Mrs. Whatever your last name is.
