BaxterBGood stuff!!
I’ll be in Southport, where the Old Man stories were largely born, this afternoon. Anyone close, come on down and we’ll hoist a toast to RR.

BlacktailerThank you Ann.
If anyone asks why we hunt Africa, this post explains it better than anything.

kevin hendersonI'm at the office, just finishing up end of month stuff. Not where I want to be at all. Just a quick check of AR before I head home and I found this thread. I'm back in Africa in my mind. That's where I really wish to be.
Thanks, Ann.

mbogobutchThanks for this Ann, Bob Ruark was spot on, and just brilliant with his writing.
Thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you

lavacaThanks, Ann. One of my favorite authors. Re-reading Something of Value for the umpteenth time now. One of his best lines is from Horn of the Hunter, when Ginny sees Ruark and Selby drag into camp late one night; she takes one look at them and says, "Buffalo again. Idiots."
Can't tell you how many times I've thought the same thing.

BockhunterGREAT.
That is reason why many of that old writers/hunters/gunners are legends.

dgr416His books are awesome to read .I think Peter Capstick read a bunch and kinda wrote his the same way .I still have a ton of Ruark books to sale that came from his storage here in Atlanta that a friend of his got from his estate after he died .It sucks He didn't sign them you hardly see any of his books signed .My.dad's was kin to Robert Ruark his cousins are Ruarks .My.friend that was the book dealer here that knew Robert Ruark really liked him .He just said he lived life to the.fullest and did everything he wanted to in life .I bought all the Ruark books that came from that estate sale .

swaincreekThanks Ann, what a terrific post. So enjoyable to read. Ruark was a great writer.
Time for me to get out Horn of The Hunter and read again.
On a side note, my wife and I are moving out of our house of 22 years and into a new location 30 miles away. The Move has just about worn us out, we were off the grid for a week until yesterday.
I checked the AR forum this afternoon and your post was the first thing I read .Most enjoyable and refreshing.

Paul CReally good stuff. First picked up Horn of the Hunter in the public library when I was about 12 years old. Truly Golden age of hunting. Friends of our family went on a 28 day safari in Uganda and hunted with Nicky Blunt in 1970 or 1971. When Bud brought back his 8mm film of the hunt I was hooked for life on Africa.
Brilliant! Keep them coming! No one said it better than Ruark!

Already I was beginning to fall into the African way of thinking: That if
you properly respect what you are after, and shoot it cleanly and on
the animal's terrain, if you imprison in your mind all the wonder of the
day from sky to smell to breeze to flowers—then you have not merely
killed an animal. You have lent immortality to a beast you have killed
because you loved him and wanted him forever so that you could always
recapture the day - Robert Ruark

reddy375The BIG difference between then and now is the public's perception of hunters. In those days you were a hero to be admired, now you have the status of a child molester!
I just got back from Kenya, they have wiped the slate clean of anything to do with hunting there. Like a Nazi state cleansing it of hunters.
12 July 2018, 18:59
Aspen Hill AdventuresThis is why I started this post. In light of the now turned to hype and scandal for something that is quite honorable in every way. Ruark's and others from the Golden Age, quickly remind us why we do this.

jimmy jFantastic post!!
Just got back from my first-ever safari trip in Namibia.
I have always been a huge Ruark fan, but this post reminds me of the quality of his works and the ability he had to express what I fail to find words for.
Only been back for two weeks, and this post already has me wanting to book the next trip.
Thanks again for a great post Ann!
Thanks for a great post. Brought back many African memories!
