Walter in his all glory!

Many of you remember my old friend Walter.

He was a character one cannot forget once he meets him.

Walter was in love with his Blaser rifle, and insisted that we take it on safari.

The rifle was chambered for the 7x64 Brenneke cartridge, which is basically the metric version of the 280 Remington.

I thought this might be a good opportunity to try a trick on him.

He gave up loading ammo, because he never got the hang of using an electronic scale.

Took him roughly an hour to load 5 cartridges.

So he asked me to develop a load and load the ammo for his hunt.

I was glad to do so.

I worked a good load for him with the Nosler Partition 150 grain bullet.

Then got an idea of playing a trick on him.

Instead of using .284 caliber bullets, I tried .277 caliber bullets.

Thinking I could load a few rounds that did not shoot so well.

Didn't work.

Still shot good enough for hunting, about 2 inches.

How the hell can I made those bullets go all over the place.

Saw a Dremel drill lying there, and started taking lead and parts from the rear of the bullets.

I cannot remember the weights now, but I think they went from around 90 grains to 130 grains.

From the originals which were 150 grains, and in .277 caliber instead of .284.

SUCCESS!

They were hitting the side walls of the tunnel, instead of the target! clap

I loaded a few of these, using CCI Bench Rest primers.

Those have a tiny BR inprint on them.

You will see in the video the results.

In one instant he did not close the bolt properly, and the rifle misfired, which added to all our enjoyments.

We all miss him.

Poor Walter, I feel sorry for him being the butt of so many pranks. I guess he may have appreciated the humour as he seemed to enjoy antics involving a lot of fun.
I know you have told this story of making these defective rounds before Saeed and it still makes me laugh. I laughed again watching Walter struggling to get them on target. The video is a nice way to remember Walter in his element.

In the old days we had so many different video formats.

I am going through our old videos and converting them to MP4.

brings back many memories!

I am surprised that Walter did not take you down and sit on you for a bit after that one...

That’s an old classic! Good stuff.

I’m glad I got to meet Walter and share a campfire before he passed.

Classic, Saeed.

How long did that go on before Walter stopped asking you to handload ammunition for him? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

For his sake, I hope not long! rotflmo

Walter wanted me to chamber a barrel for him to fit the Blaser for my 375/404.

Trouble is his Blaser has one of those utterly stupid stick designs that smack you in the face each time you shoot it.

I had a 375 H&H barrel for the Blaser, so suggested he tries that - explaining to him the nasty recoil.

He said he would.

And he would load his own ammo, as he no longer has any trust in me Confused

So I loaded a few rounds with Nosler 300 grain bullets, maximum in the book.

Hid these.

Walter turns up, and I suggested he looks in the loading manuals for a load that used the least amount of powder for the lowest velocity, and reduce that by 15% to start with.

He got himself a large piece of cake, and a cup of coffee and sat down to load his ammo.

He loaded 3 rounds, and went to shoot.

He is left handed, so was moving the rifle rest to his side.

I swapped my maximum loaded ammo to his minimum minus 15%.

He fired the first shot, and s reamed AWAWAW!

“This bloody thing KICKS!”

“Try another one, and hold it tight!”

He did.

Same results!

I said “remember, you will need to load a better load than these pipsqueeks for buffalo! Would be fun watching you screaming after missing with your flinch!”

He decided that he didn’t want that barrel after all.

Did you buy Walter's Blaser for him?!

You must have got a defective one from the "Factory seconds" sale! rotflmo

My Blasers don't kick at all, even with the .375 H&H barrel!

Of course, l do not use ammo provided by YOU!

There is a common thread in these stories. rotflmo

Mike,

I think the models' they sell in the US have different stocks.

The one Walter had, had one of those stocks designed by a ten year old bully!

Who wants to see how much suffering the shooters get!

I shoot all sorts of large bores, no problems.

Shooting some of those German stocked rifles makes feel as I have had ten rounds with Mike Tyson!

They REALLY clobber me, on the CHEEK!

I’ve seen those Germanic hog-backed stocks and I don’t like them either.

Not my style at all.
