I'm in the dark about how to measure a Buffalo's horns. A taxidermist I know showed me a head that looked good but not exceptionally big and told me it was 48". He claimed the correct way to measure a Cape Buff was to measure around the outer curl of the horn, being a virgin I had no idea if this is the accepted method so I kept my mouth shut (sure didn't look much bigger than some 36" I had in one of my books). What is the proper way to measure one of these animals, from what point to what point, etc?

I believe the confusion is between scoring the horns and the width of the horns. SCI (see form below) scores the horns by measuring entire horn around the curls tip to tip and adding the widths of the two bosses. The width is the distance between the outside of the two curls.
