Back from Cameroon
Just got back from my safari in Cameroon. Great time. I was hunting with Ngong Safaris out of Garoua Cameron. Main quarry was Western Roan. Was hoping they would have a LD Eland left on quota, but they filled 100 percent this year. Biggest Eland was 51 inches.
Took a really nice Nigerian Bohor Reedbuck, an Oribi, a Western Hartebeest and Roan. Didn't get a bushbuck. Just didn't have enough time to allow for hunting them properly. Also allowed to take unlimited baboons at no charge.
The roan was fantastic. 30 inches on the left horn, 30 1/2 on the right. Both bases over 10 inches. Fantasticly old animal. Ridges on the horns worn off, hooves split, teeth worn down. Battle scars. Just perfect.

The reedbuck was about 9 1/2 inches each horn. Good Mass. Saw lots of others just like him in the area.
The oribi was about 6 inches each horn. Lots of oribi running around here. Looks like 6 inches is about as god as you will do, which ain't bad for an oribi.

Hartebeest was just a decent representative animal. I put lots of time looking for a big roan and just took the first mature hartebeest we had a chance at.
Lots of Olive baboons. I kept a big male for a trophy. Will mount him lifesize. Anybody got any suggestions on a god mount for one of these?
We saw LD Eland 4 times. Lots of game in this area. If you are looking for a really good savannah trip without feeling like you are staying in a Hilton. Look these guys up. I probably saw over 200 Roan on the 12 day trip. They also do Bongo and Forest Ele farther south.
Anyone else doing any good so far? I'll try to get some pics off as soon as I can get them back.

Bill CNice trip MAC, congratulations! Looking forward to the pict's and related stories. I'd also love to hear what the traveling was like (Air France?), and how you found the people in Cameroon to be including your PH.

MARK H. YOUNGMac,
I'm quite interested in Cameroon myself. I'll be very interested in your pictures. A 30" roan! That is a real trophy. My roan is a weenie in comparison. I'd really be interested in accomodations, weather, PH etc.
Congratulations on a great safari.
Regards,
Mark

Steve RichardsTaking a big old roan like that, especially in an off-the-beaten-path safari destination like Cameroon. Wow! That's what I call 'doing it right'! Sounds like a fantastic adventure. Hope I do half as well in Zambia next year.

AtkinsonWhew! that is some Roan, can't wait to see the photos of that hunt...I sure would like to kill a Lord Derby Eland myself as I have not as yet, nor a Bongo...

MLindsayFantastic hunt! Borge runs a great outfit, especially for Roan. A good friend of mine hunted with him a couple of years ago and took a 29 inch roan. Did you see any good eland bulls? I had heard Borge had taken a 50 inch plus eland this year which is a tremendous animal!
