Sebastian Wicker - Coutada 14
Sorry to report that Sebastian Wicker, son of Toni Wicker has passed away. He was hunting in Coutada 14 and was bitten by a forest cobra. Apparently the first hospital did not have the anti venom on hand and by the time he made it to another hospital in Beira it was too late.

Sebastian was a young man with a fiance and young child.

My thoughts go out to them and of course Toni, who frequents this site.

Toni if you see this please reach out and let us know you are doing ok.

RIP Sebastian

Very sad and very unfortunate.
One tip of advice, which might sound odd. When you're bitten by a snake in Africa, go on facebook. Find a snakes group from the country or region you're in. Or better, join those groups before you go on safari. Many doctors in rural Africa don't know how to treat snakebites properly, and in those groups there are many experts. You'll get a reply within minutes, and be given whatsapp numbers of snakebite experts. I've seen it save lives.
Of course, in a bad incident, where antivenom is needed but not available on time, nothing might help, but in other cases it might, and it's always best to be advised by experts.
Of course, this is in addition to contacting your medical insurer. However, it's very likely the snakebite experts are better at assessing the type of venom involved, and where antivenom might be found within the country. Don't use either exclusivey, use them together. Time can be a very important factor.

How awful! Another young professional hunter taken too soon.

I hunted in Sebastian’s camps in Northern Mozambique and had the pleasure of meeting and sharing camp with him during that time. He was a careful steward of the land and animals and great company in camp.

My condolences and sympathy to his family and friends.

So much sad news in such a short time.
Having treated literally hundreds of snakebites the serious ones I can count on one hand. Truly an unfortunate accident.

Such a tragic accident. For as much as hunters are in the bush, perhaps surprising more people aren’t bitten.

Sincere Condolences to his family.

Piggybacking on what BushPeter suggested, here are some great Facebook groups for African Snakes….

Snakes and Snakebite of Africa. African Snakebite Institute. African Reptiles and Venom.

I hope none of us ever need to contact them.

Condolences to his family. Tragic loss.

If you are hunting in the wild areas, you likely won't have access to antivenin for some hours at least and the nearest meaningful hospital is a day or more away.

These young Pros dying at the height of their careers is troubling to say the least. I feel so bad for their families.

Sebastian handled several of my clients via Mokore Safaris. I never heard any complaints. RIP
