Usangu Safaris
Has anyone been to the Selous areas U3, MA1, or LU4 with Usangu Safaris? In particular for Buffalo? How about the Usangu Game Reserve Area? I'm interested in terrain, Buffalo numbers, PH's, overall trip.

Going to LU1 with Usangu in September, until then I can offer no direct comments. I can tell you that we checked around with a number of satisfied hunters that have hunted with Usangu in the past, including a lawyer that I know in New York that hunted in the Usangu reserve and had a great trip. Would go back in a minute and is planning to do so again in 2007.

308xp,

When were you offered those areas? Usangu no longer own those concessions. They always belonged to TAWICO which until last year was owned by the same group. Since the sale of TAWICO, those particular concessions are not operated by Usangu anymore but by the new TAWICO owners. As far as I know, Usangu do not own any Selous concessions - unless they took some over in the interim which i have not heard off.

These are the areas that are printed in the brochure they sent. The're listed under "Selous"

As I said, Usangu do not have those "Selous" blocks (LU4, U3 and MA1) any longer. they belong to TAWICO. TAWICo used to be run by the same owners as Usangu until they sold it off loast year. TAWICO is now operated by a totally different group and they have those concessions.

cheers,

I have indeed hunted with Usangu. It was back in 1999 and I did have a good safari, however, it was only due to alot of hard work by myself and booking agent upfront. I do know the family well and I would indeed be very careful.

Since my safari I know they have hit the area hard. Ethics is indeed in question with them.

It is true that they no longer have access to the Selous concessions that they show. This was sold with Taiwico. I just came back from a month in Tanzania and have asked the specific question about Selous areas. While they may be subleasing something, the company does not have their own.

They are certainly a cheap hunt, however, I would be careful.

Cognac,

I am booked with Usangu in LU1 of the Selous in 35 days. Can you be a little clearer in what you mean by "be very careful"?

Thanks!
