My son just called me into his room to watch a video on his computer that he had downloaded off the internet. I knew immediately that it was an African hunting video from the getup of the guys.

Turns out it was a lion hunt. But you could tell from the outset that it was a canned hunt. The lion being stalked, a beautiful black-maned male, was walking down a game fence as the cadre of hunters, PH and hunter's trophy wife manuvered into shooting position. The hunter finally got a clear shot and the lion went down, but it immediately got up again.

In the next scene you hear the chuff, chuff, chuff of a heavy breathing lion as the camera catches him in full charge. The hunter fires at about twenty yards, as does the PH and the second hunter. The lion does not slow down. Another shot rings out as the lion goes airborne, swiping at the hunter, sending him to his back as the lion passes by and piles up on the ground behind the group. As the lion struggles to regain its feet. The second hunter shoots him, but the lion regains his feet and heads back toward the group, Another shot rings out, but you can't tell who fired it, but the lion, instead of pressing it's charge, passes by the downed first hunter and hightails it, as the PH closes the deal with a going-away shot. The hunter manages to finally get up and administers the coup de gras.

Had this been "real" hunt, the sequence would have been beyond exciting. But in the credits, it says it took place in South Africa, as if the fence didn't give it away. I found myself feeling very, very sorry for the lion.

Anybody else seen this video? If not, I'll post the address in another post so you can check it out.

Sorry. Anybody interested in seeing a REAL lion charge and a hunter rescue his PH, should get a copy of Wes Hixon's "In the Jaws of Simba" video. Very exciting footage.

I believe this has been posted several times in the past few months. Yes, it is a canned hunt and it is sickening.

Very sad. I like to hunt my animals were they are able to run away and never be seen again. I don't mind hunting were there is lots of game, just as long as it can get up and go to the next concession or zone and doesn't come running up looking for food. It kind of defeats the purpose of "hunting" if you can pick out ahead of time the animal you intend to "hunt".

The biggest giva-a-way is that the credits say it took place in South Africa. Unless I am mistaken, there is very, very little opportunity for fair chase lion hunting in RSA. What is available takes place adjoining Kurger, and the odds of finding this quality mane on an open hunting area is beyond remote.



Of course, the fact that it was walking down a game fence was another clue.



Ray, I misspoke, and I stand corrected. It was a REAL charge and the chances of someone getting badly hurt or killed were definitely high. I should have said anyone wanting to see a charge on a Real Lion Hunt should view "In the Jaws of Simba."

Having seen the video last time this was posted, I actually wondered if the half tame lion might have been de-clawed or something. The whole thing was just so fishy that it wouldn't have suprised me... It doesn't look to me like it really knew how to attack in an efficiant and natural way, or the guy would have been killed claws or no claws.



All in all, a very sad video, and I only wish the lion had taken them all out!

How do you know it was a "canned" hunt?

If you had viewed the clip, you'll notice the tall fenceline where the lion has been backed up to.

I have seen a video not sure its the same one.

A glimpse of a fence is just that. How does that equal a pen?

Would anyone feel different if the lion was backed up to a vertical rock wall?

I am no defender of canned hunts, don't book them nor go on them, but a Lion charge is a Lion charge and that one near got a bunch of amatuers killed, but for the grace of God and one lucky shot that turned the Lion at the last minute, the good doctor would now be headless.....so apparantly this one was no cake walk...

Although i have seen this video before, I would like to save it so please post a link.

There are fences, lighting poles, unusual behavior of the lion whilst being followed on foot, the embarassment of not knowing how to kill, fleeing instead of attacking the group of hunters all are unmistakable signs that the lion was not a wild lion..
