A really old Western Savannah Buffalo

Some of you have asked about the age of Western Savannah Buffalo. This is the oldest buffalo and probably also the biggest bodied Savannah buffalo that I have ever seen. Its horns were totally worn down.

That morning all the clients had left camp and I was lazing around, when Ishmael the PH came by and said he was going to check some camera traps we had put up. So I said I would join him. We had just driven outside camp when we saw tracks of two lions walking on the road. We drove along following these tracks, past a couple of waterholes when suddenly one of the boys shouted they there are! I immediately thought he had seen the lions, when I looked up I saw two old buffalo bulls, this one and his companion a totally red bull also very old. This one presented a better target so I let fly with my 416 remington hitting him dead in the shoulder at 40 yards! He took off like nothing happened and I was frankly amazed that he showed no sign of being hit. I followed up with a solid as he was running away and he immediately dropped. The second bull then stopped and turned around facing us, I could have easily have shot him too, but decided to let him go!

I must say I felt a twinge of regret as he seemed to wait for his fallen companion before slowly moving off.

I hope that there will be some game left when peace returns to Burkina! It really was a cool place. Even now at the shows I get past clients come by and say it was one of the best hunts they had been on!

Nice...

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Now that is a trophy bull. Maybe Benin will be a good substitute with Burkina closed.

Arjun,
That is either a huge beast, as you say, or you're standing a good distance behind !
I never tire of seeing grand "old men" buff and this one is a real classic.
Thankyou for another fine pic to enjoy.
Cheers

Thanks for all your comments.

No sitting a mile behind needed (I hate those bloody pictures) or ground shrinkage on this one!
