Any way you slice it...it was a totally foolish act on the part of this client!! IMO: The ph was way closer to death at the hands of his client, then he ever was with the buffalo! Our "hero" in the Gander mt. shirt was lucky that he did not receive a proper old fashioned "dressing down" from the PH!
Had the Ph not had more pressing matters on his mind, (such as following up the wounded bull), then we may have seen a few choice words exchanged on tape, and I wouldn't blame the PH one bit....he came too damm close to being shot!
If this "Gander" guy does not recognize this very basic (common sense) rule: that one does not shoot at an animal when a human being is standing between you and it... then IMO he has no business hunting!!
If Mr. Gander Mt. wanted to save the day by shooting the charging buffalo; then he should have been standing alongside his PH, not ten feet behind him, as it apprears on the video.
The client should have just kept his cool, held his fire, or whatever, and let the PH do what he's paying him for.

Some PHs request the client to stand beside him on a "follow up". This might have been a prudent idea in this instance.

Seriously, this was posted by Gander Mountain as an "exciting" hunting video? Looks like the hunter learned safe handling techniques from this professional:

I have hunted with Mike Payne, stayed at his home, and he has stayed at mine. He has balls of steel, shoots like a laser beam, and can track like a Shona. He's a multi-generation Zim, whose father was killed in the bush wars. He's a hell of a man, and I'd kick the ass of anyone who disrespected him (not that he'd need any help). He stood his ground and laid that double right into the crown of that buff. I know the story and those involved.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Where in the hell did that come from?

And where did I say anything negative about the PH? My comments were directed at the client, not the PH.

Sorry, I misread you post!!! My applogies

I'm no PH and won't ever be one, but I certainly wouldn't want to be in front of someone whose competence with a firearm is unknown to me. I'd want the amateur hunter directly beside me the whole time, where I could take note of where his muzzle was pointed with my peripheral vision.

But I'm not knocking the ability or the good sense of the PH, and there may have just been no easy way to handle such a situation. And fortunately nothing bad came of that gaffe but frayed nerves and a missed shot. However, I do think he should take more precautions in the future.

HUH????????????????????????????????????? Nobody said anything derogatory about the PH! The client, however.......

Anyway! That's mighty bold talk from behind a key board 1000 miles away! The word "ANYONE" can cover a whole lot of people, some a little more formidable than others!

The client may well have been dressed down by the PH after he saw the video but most PHs are too professional to dress down a client in front of the camera, trackers or any others.
