OrvarTravel Case : Blaser + DR
Am thinking of getting a takedown case for my Blaser R93, and the VC500... add a small duffel, and I can hunt for 10 days anywhere easily.
Anyone done this? Am thinking Nigrini... it's so nice not to have long case, and be prey for useless Customs agents.takedown cases seem to go through relatively unnoticed....

OrvarI have a Pelican and love it.
BUT, it says GUN in an airport...

BiebsI forget what model mine is, but it's like an elongated cube. It has 3 levels, so I put a DR in the bottom, a layer of foam, then the Blaser on top and the last layer of foam. Looks like this:

BEGNOBoyt makes a rolling duffel that has a bottom compartment for a take down case. I went to Argentina with a guy that used one and his luggage went straight to the luggage carousel without going through the customs gun routine.

N E 450 No2I use the Tuffpak takedown Case. I put the rifles in either Boyt takedown cases or regular soft cases that are long enough to be folded double. Two rifles, cleaning gear, and a few knifes, are still under 50 lbs.

OrvarThanks guy!
Had an Orvis case like that in the past... Worked a charm, but couldn't get 2 in there + the 2 guns + case is like already 25lbs, so with new weight restrictions, no longer an option.

BEGNOGeorge,
Sure they x-rayed it. I didn't say I advised it, just that he did it. The point is that no one recognized that he had a gun in his duffle, which is what Orvar is trying to accomplish.
He had done everything right up to his entry back into the US. He should have retrieved his luggage and gone back to the gun check guys but he didn't. He is a don't give a crap kind of guy but had his 4457 etc. He did not see the point of going back. The only reason this is unusual is because he left the country and returned. If he was flying within the US there is nothing to report.

pagosawingnutI also used the Boyt Case with my rifles in the bottom one year. Had the same experience, picked it up off the luggage carousel and could have walked out of the airport with it without being checked. I've gone to using the shorter Tuffpak with the doubles and the Blaser. Man does that work out nice.

OrvarThat new 32" Tuffpak might work out nice...
What cases do you use inside. FOR THE blaser?

WhitworthI have a number of Negrini cases and could't be happier.

OrvarMe too... One option is to use the 34" double for shotgun (for the DR) and Auto (for the Blaser)

joesterI've used the Tuffpack short case for my takedown rifles on many occasions, never had a problem. Plus, to the average traveller or hotellier, it does't appear to be a gun case. Saw several being used by film crews & musicians.

pagosawingnutOrvar,
For the blasers, I use a double rifle case for the barrels and a normal soft case for the stock/receiver. I'll need a soft case anyway when I get there and the end of it just folds over to make it short enough. Works out well.

butchloci have a double sided short case that fits in a duffel. holds 2 rifles taken down. that's all i've used for the last 15 yrs or so. usually comes through as plain baggage rather than in the gun line

eyeman+1 Americase. They make for two blaser rifles and am sure your double will fit.

BuffNutMy "go to" has been a Tuffpak for years. I have to say I love that case but I'm so tired of opening it and hauling the rifles in and out of it at TSA, Customs, etc. - it's a production.
I'm headed to Tanzania in October with two Pelican Storm cases with custom cut interiors for a Blaser R8 and a Merkel 140-2 DR. My plan was to have an interior cut that would accommodate both rifles with two barrels and two scopes for the Blaser, but I had my front sight replaced on the Merkel and didn't have it back in time to get that done. I plan to have that case prepared in time for next year's trip to Mozambique, assuming the Blaser doesn't get me killed and I'm still using it a year from now. . . .
