GatehouseOne African animal you never tire of hunting?
If you had to choose one African animal that you never tire of hunting, what would it be?
Let's assume you have a reasonable bank account, but you aren't Bill Gates

DB BillLeopards, Leopards, and more Leopards. I hate to hunt Leopards but I can't stop.
The most fun to hunt... that's easy, Kudu!
18 October 2001, 11:15
<Telly>For me it has to be Cape Buffalo. If I go to Africa 20 times, I could/would hunt them everytime.
18 October 2001, 11:37
BigBMy experience is limited to one safari and I did not take a lion or leopard but I did take an elephant and a buffalo. If I had the money I would hunt elephant every trip.

mbogo375For me personally it has to be buffalo in the thick stuff. That's always a rush. If I stop being excited by this I will know that it is time to hang up my guns (or be covered by six feet of dirt

).
Good hunting,
Jim

<Bill>Kudu, they just seem so sneaky

<Terry P>Tracking down a cape buffalo and getting close, with an iron sighted big bore rifle is as good as it gets.
18 October 2001, 13:12
CrosshairsBuff...
I just LOVE the way that they are hunted. Find a track and follow it. What a blast!
And then sorting out the bulls from the cows then the big bulls from the young bulls....
Ahhh... it's just the total experience.
I expect elephant is a lot like that but I haven't had the oportunity to try it yet... next time I will!!

<Ross Spagrud>Buffalo again and again
18 October 2001, 13:35
<PWN>After two trips I would have to say buffalo. But let me finish leopard, lion and elephant and I will let you know.

MacD37I'm highcentered on Cape Buffalo, with all four wheels spinning in open air!
I would like to take one big Elephant bull, but only one, I could hunt Buffalo every day for the rest of my life!

<JohnDL>Buffalo! Frankly, I've tired of most "plainsgame", but never buffalo. No two hunts are the same. They're always exciting, with a hint of danger. Recently finished a 21 day mixed bag safari. Next time it will be just buff.

loud-n-boomerOnly one? Based on my limited experience it would be Buffalo in the thick stuff followed very closely by stalking Bushbuck and/or Kudu in thick stuff.

Matt NormanDeep checkbook: elephant
Sorta deep checkbook: buffalo
My checkbook: kudu
I've only done the top two once each, and hope the credit union will see fit to let me do it again relatively soon. Big kudu bulls still give me a chubby and don't cost like a rectal tonsillectomy.

<Sooner>Gotta be Buffalo, but like Matt Norman said, when my checkbook is big enough, Elephant.
19 October 2001, 00:25
Terry BlauwkampI'll be the odd duck...
Give me Blue Wildebeest. Poor man's Buffalo.
Just as smart, and tough to bring down.
19 October 2001, 02:53
MacD37Let me add to my preveous post and agree with Terry B. I too, have an affenity for wildebeest, but my favorite is a toss-up between the black, and the Cookson's. In fact I would like to book a safari for Leopard, and shoot wildebeest for all my baits! After the Leopard is in the salt, if any time is left hunt Buffalo!

Steve RichardsIt's gotta be buffalo. I wonder what a buff hunt would cost if they were as limited as elephant for instance. Buff hunting has to be one of the greatest bargains in the world of international hunting. A great game animal at a reasonable price. What more could one ask?
19 October 2001, 08:58
DB BillI also like hunting buff (and they taste good) but they are "easy" to find and there are a lot of them. I also love the thrill of working in close but man how I love/hate to leopards. It drives me nuts....the anticipation....the boredom...the excitement and then walking up thru the grass to see if he's really dead or just waiting.
19 October 2001, 13:34
Buell98Although I have never been to Africa, I would probably like to hunt Elephant, big bulls of the early 1900's, if they still existed that is.
19 October 2001, 14:29
<10point>I have never done it yet but I know I would be blown away by Buffalo hunting. Ive seen Atkinson's and Saeed's video of some of their Buff hunt's and the excitement and adrenaline just leaps off the videotape.
I'll hunt them one day. I never tire of the Buff hunting threads that the fella's post. Everything about them blow's me away, the animals, the big bore's, the stalk's.
And Africa..........Oh........Africa!
good shooting.........10

jrslateHmmm.....Buffalo is always great, but I must go along with the Blue Wildebeest, or maybe Eland in the really thick stuff, or Kudu down south, or.....on and on and on...
Anytime you are in Africa, it's great..!!

<Bjorn Klappe>Hmmmm - interesting thread this. Seems like most of you go for buffalo.
I remember my first buffalo that I killed in 1958 using a Mauser 9.3x62. Yes, I was scared, very scared because people had told me how dangerous they are. After that it has been quite a few buffalos during the years.
I have never been charged by buffalo, and very few of the PH:s I know has either. I suppose it has to do with some skill and some luck. What amaze me are that so many writers who write about hunting in Africa has been charged by buffalo, some 7 times a week.
Elephant has charged me at least ten times, lion twice and rhino (black) once. It was not pleasant at all.
Mind you, a wounded buffalo in thick bush or jesse can be very dangerous but I would rather go in after a buffalo than a lion in the same situation. The buffalo stories are a bit exaggerated in my opinion. Hunting buffalo is a piece of cake, easy to stalk, close shots and if you know where to put your bullet it is all over. However it CAN go wrong if someone messes up.
Well having said that, which animal in Africa do I like to hunt most?
I have thought about it during a walk with the dogs in the forest this afternoon and will rank four animals that I can say I enjoy most to hunt till this day.
1. Baboon, it is the trickiest creature of them all.
2. Bushbuck, who can play hide and seek with you in area not bigger than an acre for the entire day.
3. Leopard, but only when you track him down with dogs in the Northern Namibia (no trees). He will stop and fight the dogs, you are walking just behind and when he sees you he charges immediately. That is something gentlemen!
4. Guinea fowl, I will never tire of hunting them. Oh, they can run fast and it is a challenge to get them up on their wings.
No especially dramatic animals but they are my pick.
Regards
Bjorn
23 October 2001, 06:36
DB BillBjorn.....no dramatic animal! I certainly consider a charge by an unwounded leopard as at least "mildly dramatic" and it would certainly get the attention of almost anyone I can think of. I had been planning on a leoaprd hunt with dogs in Zim for next year (2002) but I think I am going to pass on it...who did you hunt with in northern Namibia?
24 October 2001, 08:17
<Antonio>For me it is the Cape buffalo... I would do it every year if I had the money...
Antonio
I've only been to Africa twice, but I have had the most fun hunting Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Eland and Mountain Reedbuck. It was fun hunting Buff, but for the money I'll take plains game.

<Paul Machmeier>Cape Buffalo always gets my vote for an animal that can give you a hunting thrill year after year. Elephant would be great too, once, as pocketbook allows. The stalk involved in the buffalo hunt, locating the herd and suddenly finding yourself closer that you ever thought! Gives one an adrenalin rush!
18 January 2002, 06:29
<Harry>Years ago, before I ever got the chance to go to Africa and hunt buffalo, I was visiting with the old Col. Chas. Askins. He mentioned he was going on his 36th safari. I made the mistake of asking him what he would be hunting. He looked at me with the look that made me sure he knew what a dumbass I was and then said, "Why hell boy....BUFFALO!"
Now that my one and only is hanging next to me here as I type this...I understand.
21 January 2002, 12:18
<jacon>I would have to say Elephant, buffalo and oddly enough Mountain Zebra in that order!
