Doxhcycline price?
Has anyone tried to by Doxy lately?

Last year we paid $10.14 for 70 pills, and now prices range up to 322.00 for same 70 pills.

Doxy used to be a cheap antibiotic... are you on the same insurance plan or is this Obamacare at it's best!

Yes, actually I took doxycycline this past September and it wasn't any $322 for a months supply; not even close. Were you buying brand name or generic?

For those who don't know, you can get medications through a Canadian pharmacy just by sending them your prescription. The price is sometimes a WHOLE lot cheaper. Of course, the medications might be made in India or Pakistan; if that bothers you then don't do it.

there was an article on last nights neews about this. seems as there is quite a shortage. Doxy - Shortage???? bsflag another was for the drug companies to raise their prices. however it exists

I just checked with a couple of pharmacies and the price has gone up quite a bit. Prices today were:

1. At my local Kroger Pharmacy for 60 100 mg tablets it would cost you $202.59.

2. At the Canadian pharmacy for 180 100 mg tablets it would cost you $115.99. A 3 months supply is the only option through them.

Also, in case you weren't aware of it, you don't have to be a member of Costco or Sam's Clubs to use their pharmacy or optical services and sometimes they're cheaper.

Over the last several years there has been shortages of a fair number of common medications. What the reason is, I'm not sure, but would suspect that the drug companies wish to expend their efforts on manufacturing newer still on patent more profitable medications.

ask your doctor if you can substitute minocycline, or vibramicin, which is a tetracycline,,,, Vibramicin around here is still cheap,,, are you using it for Malaria prophlaxis? You would have to check the area you are going to see what drug resistant strains are possible,,,

I recall when I first bought doxy ten years ago it cost less than my $10 insurance copay.

Terry,
What are you using it for? Tick bite fever or something else? Just curious if I should add it to my meds when I come to Zim in June.
Thanks

Doxy is cheap in Africa (like $1.00 to $3.00 for ten caps). Just buy it when you arrive, in many countries there is no need for a prescription.

Ask the locals, they'll know which pharmacy sells good drugs, and ask the pharmacist which brand is the best he has.

Both minocycline and doxycycline are tetracyclines. Vibramycin is a brand nave for doxycycline so I'd be surprised if it was still cheap.

I take one a day for Maleria, and it also helps with preventing Tick Bite...

Been doing this for years, and it seems to work, But... keep taking it 2-3 weeks AFTER you come home, to compensate for a Tick gestation period if you get bit the last day.

Not a horrible idea as I have done this on the continent before. That said....there was a Bloomberg report the other day that interpol is setting up a special group to address the prevalence of counterfeit drugs in the world. The estimate (and I have no idea how they would arrive at this number) was that 10% of everything out there is fake and possibly either dangerous or ineffective in relative terms. Wanna guess which continent probably has more of these than anywhere else? Just a thought.

Just talked with my pharmist and he can not get it. He checked pricing - wholesale 500 pill bottle $2,000. He is concerned about our local tick season as this is the go to drug. Insurance companies will not cover the cost of the drug. Who the Hell is going to pay this price. Obamacare in the works!

When you take the profit out of a product, no one wants to make it anymore. Soon, only one company makes it and BAM, instant monopoly subject to price increases on a whim and instant shortages if any problems on the one line in the world where it is made.

Just checked with one of my wholesale vendors....
500 pill bottle of 100mg generic doxy is.......$4400

Joking aside....... I STRONGLY suggest that If anyone is thinking about taking Doxy or any other antibiotic for anything like a longish period, they also take daily doses of live acidophilis & also pack a few tubes of thrush treatment cream.

If you want cheap tetracycline, or amox., cephalexin, carbenic., look in ebay under antibiotics used in fish aquariums. Pay 25.00 per 100 tablets. The tablets contain the same ACTIVE chemical in stated dosages that a pharmacy will provide. I am not kidding. I have done it and used the tablets myself. It would not be a mistake for you to do similarly.

While in the Rio Grande Valley last month, I crossed over to Progresso MX and picked up a 100 count bottle of 100 mg Doxiciclina capsules for $10.95.

For years in South Africa I would buy my meds there and bring them back to the US. Cheaper there than my copay here in AK. While I didn't need a script there I kept one with me from my doc in case customs had any questions when I returned (they never did). I also hand yearly dental exams done there as well as crowns and a bridge which was about 20% of the price in AK (my dentist was not too pleased I did this).
Cheers,
Cal
PS. This make a good topic for a separate thread.

For the ticks would Azithromycin 250mg tablets for a z-pac which is 6 tablets for a 5 day full course of antibiodic therapy work as well?
I have that but not the doxhcycline at this time.

My wife is a veterinarian. She can't get Doxy for her clinic right now. Apparently it's not being manufactured in large quantities at the moment. or possibly at all for US consumption. No idea why not however.

When she could get it a bottle of 500 would cost me about $15.00.

Don't know what's going on, but last year there was a shortage of Lansoprazole (Prevacid 24) an over the counter acid reflux med. For 3 or 4 months had to use substitutes to get by.
Thankfully, when they became available again the price had not shot up.
Don't remember this kind of thing happening before.

When I came back from the RSA two years ago with a case of tick fever, my physician put me on Doxycycline for a week. Fixed my wagon.

Azithromycin is an erythromycin analog, not a tetracycline analog. They are in no way interchangeable.

Often times it is not anything to do with big Pharma but the silly rules imposed by the FDA.

Several different companies have stated different reasons for the shortage. These include raw material shortages, increased demand, and lack of production from closures or discontinued manufacture. I tend to think its a combination weighted toward reduction in production due to low profit. Many of the older, low profit drugs are being phased out and manufacturing capacity used for newer, often more effective, more profitable products.

There are reports that the doxy shortage is lessening but these may be regional reports.

As a business man, I also go through my movement reports & look at things that are not making the money they should for the investment & then look to see what I can add to my inventory that will increase my profitability.
Having a business with a physical structure limits my ability to have everything customers might want or need, not so IMHO with the drug industry.
As important as Doxy is, I hope that it is not on the cropping block, but drug companies also have to make a profit or they will disappear.

Doxycycline will always stay around to treat the few obscure diseases that the tetracyclines are most effective for and sometimes the only effective drug.

I wouldn't feel too sorry for the drug companies; their profits are HUGE. They get public money for R&D and then charge big prices while their drug is on patent. In addition, some of the drugs they market either don't work that well or at all or are meant to replace an older cheaper drug that will work just as well.

There is NO reason for them to charge what they are apparently charging except that they can. It didn't suddenly become more expensive to make doxycycline.
