I find quite the opposite.

Using my own guns with my own ammo that I loaded is a major part of the hunting experience. Would I use a camp gun if my rifles got delayed ... sure, but that's the exception.

Sadly you will never understand us.

Having your own rifles, your own ammo, made by yourself for hunting.

Never leave home without them.

There are many countries one can travel too with his own guns without too much hassle.

Go there.

Avoid the shitty places, Johannesburg is the last place I would fly through.

Hunting or not.

Last time I flew there on a photo safari, Emirates took my camera bag separately, and it was handed to me at customs by an Emirates employee!

All to avoid theft!

I don't understand all the angst about travelling through joburg with guns????? I've been doing it regularly for almost 20 years, the last five years, two or three times a year. Never a hiccup. Always,use a permit service for pre approved permit.

Easy peasy.

The only problems I've ever had with luggage was caused on the US side in all my trips.

Saeed, Please dont refer to Joburg as a 'shithole', some members live there and others - like myself - enjoy the city and have great friends there.

And unless I am mistaken they were digging diamonds out of the ground there long before the Arabs were pumping oil out of the sands to build the likes of Dubai and other 'modern' cities!

I also have had no problems with Johannesburg and my personal items. Of course having Bruce from Gracy riding shotgun on it probably makes a huge difference.

I get that the city has some substantial crime issues and there are all kinds of folks with a hand out for a tip that gets tiring... but thats less of an issue than in some other places where the government guys have their hands out as well.

I will say if I was going to buy a house in South Africa, it most certainly would not be in jo-berg... but then I haven't moved into the metropolis of Minneapolis either.

I did go through Johannesburg to Mozambique with guns and the biggest gripe was airlink demanding a bunch of money to carry the guns.

Are there any transit hotels in the Jo'berg airport that allow you to stay within the airport on the international side? (Not go through customs). I know there was a few years back, but it appears to be closed. I am transiting Jo'berg on my way to Harare with a 10 hour layover and would prefer not to go through RSA customs if possible.

I used to ship my rifles ahead to Zimbabwe, through South Africa.

No problems for several years.

Then suddenly they demanded we apply for an import and export permits!

Stupidy there has no end!

Leaving your bags in OR Tambo for 10 hours is just asking for the bags to be ransacked. If you are flying Airlink to Harare, and have a firearm, they will likely make you recheck your bags so they can charge you a “firearms handling fee”.

Here is my advise.

There is a direct flight from Lisbon Portugal to Maputo. Sadly nothing direct to Beira or Lichinga, but at least you should be able to travel without too much hassle.

O the joy of owning my own Travel Agency now.........

South Africa has implemented a moratorium on firearms going to Mozambique, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and Lesotho. Additionally, import permits for firearms will be issued only at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Permits will no longer be issued upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport nor any other airports in South Africa. This is according to the South African Central Firearms Registrar, which is responsible for issuing firearm licenses and permits in South Africa.

The moratorium affects hunting clients and South African citizens and will be applied at all airports and border crossings. There is no indication how long the moratorium will be in place. SCI members planning to fly to or transit through South Africa with firearms should contact their safari operators and travel agents regarding travel or hunting options.

Additionally, no airport other than O.R. Tambo International Airport will be staffed to issue firearm import permits upon arrival. Hunters flying into Cape Town or any other international airport in South Africa will need to acquire a pre-issued import permit.

I thought ALL firearms permits are PRE-ISSUED???

Thanks, Kathi. Have sent Barbara a note seeking assistance/information on getting a pre-issued permit as I will be arriving via United at Cape Town International Airport in mid-July. Will stay with friends there and then on to Namibia to hunt, returning to the Cape in mid-August to pick up United back to the States. Maybe this moratorium will have ended by then, but best to sort things out to the extent possible...
