Where to go for Eland, Bushbuck and Hyena?
I have begun to think about my next safari, and I would like to hunt Eland (Livingstone), Bushbuck (Chobe or Limpopo) and Hyena. I want to hunt in a big game area, where there is a good chance of seeing elephants and seeing / hearing lions. Current countries are Zimbabwe, Zambia or Mozambique. Are there any as tips on areas where there are good hunting opportunities on these 3 species?

Contact peter chipman. He can take you to Chikwa GMA where you will get a fine livingstone eland as well as have a very good chance at hyena and bushbuck also. Plenty cats all over the place and one of the true wilderness areas to hunt in the luangwa valley in Zambia.

Roger Whittall Safaris, Save Conservancy, Zimbabwe
Mokore Safaris, Save Conservancy, Zimbabwe

I am hunting with Mokore Safaris in August next year for Eland, Hyena and other Plainsgame. I have also hunted with Roger Whittall Safaris a few times.

Both these outfitters are next door to each other on the conservancy and it is home to the big five.

I would think that some of the tribal areas in Namibia have what you are looking for. Bushbuck would be the only hard one there.

Garrit Utz, might have a concession like that.

Second on Chikwa. I hunted there when Mike Heath had that area in 2011. Truly a wild area.

Is it Chipman who owns Kwalata Safari? Talked to him in a hunting show in Oslo a few years ago. I will take a closer look at Chikwa.

I know Save is a fantastic hunting area for these species, but are there any areas / ranches that are better than others when it comes to hunting for eland, bushbuck and hyena?

The operators listed have the best ranches in the Save and are the founders of the Save. I hunted a hyena with Gary at Mokore on year and we called it in at night.. I highly recommend the experience. Also they have PLENTY of great Eland and Bushbuck etc

I have only hunted one area so far on the conservancy and that's Humani owned by Roger Whittall Safaris. Humani is great for the species your after especially bushbuck as the Turgwe river runs through it so there is lots of thick bush which Bushbuck love. Watch out for the Elephant in the thick stuff though!! We had a few hairy moments in there last year!

I have driven through Mokore and it looks just as beautiful as Humani so I'm looking forward to hunting there next year.

I hope to try and call a few Hyena in when there and I'm also hoping to take a Jackal the same way unless we see either during the day.

It is the same Peter Chipman that owns kwalata safaris. He is running five GMAs in Zambia and Chikwa Musalangu happens to be one of them. He has partnered with Rann Safaris in this area and is producing excellent results there. They usually only take two eland on quota there every year and last years elands were absolute brutes.

You would not go wrong hunting with Peter, one of zambia finest in my opinion. He is operating some great GMAs as well as some of Zambias finest privately owned game ranches. Search for Nyamvu Game Ranch on you tube and it will give you an idea of how peter and his partners have transformed areas within Zambia.

The Save would be great, book early, hyena quota is limited I believe.

Torbjorn- Tented camp in Charara late season -ie sept you will get an amazing bushbuck hyena and a hard hunt for eland but you will get one. Pm me or Marty Vick or Charles Weller both who joined me in Charara last year. True wilderness area on banks of Kariba

Confirm what Buzz says. Great area - saw great eland, got a superb bushbuck and saw loads more, hyena would have been possible too had we wanted. Fully recommend it.

Hi Torbjorn,

Please send me an email if you would like to hear some Niassa, Mozambique options. We have some absolute brutes of eland, and lovely bushbuck and hyena! It's very remote, hard, wild hunting and incredibly rewarding. dave@davelangermansafaris.com

We can do that. You could start at our main camp in the Limpopo area of South Africa for the eland and then transition to our camp in Botswana on the banks of the limpopo river for bushbuck and hyena. I would be glad to diacuss this with you so just shoot me a PM.

Kambako Safaris Mozambique would be my advice. I killed a 16.5" bushbuck, my buddy an 18" bus buck. Me a 44" eland and another one 40". Me 1 hyena, my buddy 3. We got 2 buffs each and a leopard each. This is on 2 hunts. Plus kudus, zebras, huge warthogs, Niassa wildebeest, kudus and on. You will find it all there plus amazing accommodations and NO people other than the occasional Tanzanian pilgrims on the main (rough) dirt road going to see the holy wizard who is part crocodile. DO IT NOW before the antis shut it down. Almost forgot- each a great sable. You won't regret a hunt with Kambako. Unbelievable numbers of unfenced game.

Torbjorn, We offer fantastic bush buck and large blue bull eland on Humani in the Save Valley. Hyena have suddenly exploded which i believe is a result of the last 2 years of drought and the increase in lion populations. I recomend you hunt eland from July to november when the eland bulls come into rut. Humani is full up with elephant at this time as there is a natural migration to the riverine and palm forests. February and march is also a good option for eland but one can struggle for bushbuck if there has been good rains and thick cover.

I would also consider places like Northern Mozambique (Niassa)

Niassa has some of the biggest eland bulls i have seen.Again late august to november will be prime time during and after the burns. Unfortunately very few elephant left from poaching.

Peter Chipman in Zambia i have no doubt will take care of you but again late season during and after the burns.

If you are after quality eland bulls, look no further than Niassa. The trophy quality is outstanding and furthermore the bulls are dark, gun metal blue with fantastic black ruffs and huge necks. The sable are numerous and the trophy sizes are good too. Hyena are plentiful and have not been educated as in other parts of the continent. Bushbuck trophies are very good but not as numerous as in parts of Zim. If these are your preferred trophy species, believe me, having hunted there for 12 years, Niassa is the place to go.
