Greater vs Lesser Kudu

OzultraGreater vs Lesser Kudu
Which animal would you rather hunt? Which poses more of a challenge? Which animal do you think looks the coolest?
25 July 2012, 00:19
Brian ClarkI think the lesser is by far more magnificent trophy for it's looks alone, but to get one on license you need like a 21 day safari, so I will just enjoy the fruits of others labor.

Unfortunately you need to get a 21 day license which as a bonus however, will also include Gerenuk and Fringe-Eared Oryx.
The duration of the safari can normally be negotiated with the outfitter and I am pretty sure can be had for 16 days.

Yeah, but only problem I can't afford the 21 day license.

NavalukI have enjoyed hunting both. I believe the Lesser is a better looking animal and much harder to hunt on foot. It's not even close for me.

OzultraTanzania and Eithiopia currently have license for lesser kudu I believe. Does anyone know if perhaps any other countries that have these animals will open in the future perhaps?
25 July 2012, 08:42
pinotguyLesser Kudu, for sure; although, the exception, to me, would be the Greater Western Kudu which, I believe, is only huntable in CAR right now.
25 July 2012, 09:40
JBrownObviously the lesser kudu is more of a challenge.
Obviously the lesser kudu is a more rare trophy.
Obviously the lesser kudu is the one that most would rather hunt.(because it is so rare)
But anyone who says the lesser kudu is the better looking animal is high as a kite. If both animals were equally rare, greater kudu would be by far the more sought after trophy.
Yeah, you guys are high......

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.
Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

You should be able to hunt them in Uganda.

Die Ou JagterTodd, when you hunt the Lessor Kudu are you as the hunter the lessee?

I've been after a 60" Kudu for years, but so far mine have been much Lesser than that :-(

butchlocbiebs - you can go back to sleep now
I'm going to have to say lesser kudu. The area I hunted them in reminded me of mule deer hunting back home.

I would go with a lesser just because I have killed several greater kudu. Plus I think a full body mount on a lesser looks really good.
I hunt, not to kill, but in order not to have played golf....

Brian: A 21-day license is CHEAP! Secondly, one can hunt lesser kudu, gerenuk, tommy & grants, and a few others with Danny McCallum Safaris - on a 7 day hunt!!!!

Even a 7 day hunt in TZ is a few miles above my pay grade..cheap license or not.
Aaron,
That is good info to know that they can be hunted on a 7 day as I think the lesser is the prettiest of the two. One day....
30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

Aaron,
Can you PM me the details on such a hunt?
Thanks,
George

Hey good catch there, DOJ. I've been working in the Oil and Gas business too long. I just spelled it Lessor without thinking!

When I looked at this option, it was in the 50k range if I took lesser, eland, FEO, dik-dik, and gerenuk.

NakihunterI have never been to africa and my views are purely personal opinion.
I like the tight curl configuration of Kudu horns. I really like 2.5 curls with the ivory tips pointing out. My heart goes thumping at the sight of a tight curl 55" greater Kudu and not so much at 60" horns with 2-twists which points inwards.
The lesser kudu trophies are even bigger heart stoppers for me as the tight curls and outward pointed horns seems to be almost a norm. Some of those animals have huge mass!

Tom In TennesseeHave a friend PH convince the concession holder he had a friend who wud jump on discounted hunt and then cut his daily rate to convince you!
I cud have never afforded TANZ under "normal " rates. Paid for 21 day lic so Lesser and Gerunuk would be on quota....pizzed me off when Gerenuk got cancelled but I got a monster Lesser...concession magr said Top Ten when measured green....ain't been measured since as I don't play that game but the full body mount by my friend in RSA sure looks fine...
Which would I rather hunt? Greater, because I can afford to continue to do that!
BTW, spotted what ended up being MY Lesser on way to camp evening before hunt. Took us five days of hard hunting and turning down several shooters before he was found again.

I agree. It is much like the Lord Derby Eland as compared to the Cape Eland. If it's bigger, it's more attractive to the hunter, all things being equal.
