Plainsgame in Ethiopia?

joesterPlainsgame in Ethiopia?
i've always wanted to hunt Ethiopia, had many friends from there when I lived in DC. My dilemma, I'm not wanting to hunt the endemic, most-sought-after game there, just perhaps impala, baboon, other small predators, and especially...warthog! Buzz Charlton just replied to my " where to go for big warthog" question that they are there, I THINK he was serious! In many "specialty countries" the rates are so bloody high b/c of desire for local, endemic specialty game. Is it possible to book for PLAIN (literally) game in these countries at discounted day rates?

A.DahlgrenI dont know your budget but be ready to spend big $$$ if going to countries like Ethiopia
Senegal with its 95 % muslims could be a great place for a few big tuskers.

joesterI reckon I'll end up going to Ethiopia (and a few other specialty-hunts-only African countries) as a tourist rather than a hunter. I'm very fortunate in that I can afford those specialty critters, just not interested in shooting them. But those warthogs & bushpigs and hyenas are another story! Guess I'm just a redneck at heart...

graybirdI'd contact Rich Elliott who posts here on AR and see what the opportunities are in Ethiopia.

CaracalJust an example: Trophy fee for bushbuck is $6000 (or even more).

MOA TACTICALI looked at doing the same thing when I was living in Djibouti. I wanted a forest hog and Ethiopia is one of the only places you can do that.
At the end of the day I think Rich had told me the Govt wouldn't let someone hunt just forest hog.
My goal was something like a 10 day for $15000 total. And if I remember correctly this was in 2005, so I can't imagine how bad it would be now.

Die Ou JagterThe fees are set by the government and the hunting time required by species and different camps is also set by the government. That bushbuck license fee is for the Menelik's bushbuck. The Abyssinain Bushbuck is only $700. Rich can explain it much better than I can.

Kathijoester,
If you have the resources GO!!!! Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris is an outstanding company. We were just discussing this past weekend how we would like to go back, Ethiopia was the best we experienced in Africa.
Some fees are beyond the outfitters control, $250 per day Community Conservation & Concession Fee, 15% VAT on daily rate,Government scout fee $40 per day.
Ethiopia has license fees, not trophy fees. So before the hunt starts you purchase the licenses of the animals you are after.
As stated above, contact Rich Elliott to arrange the hunt you want.
You will not be disappointed, good luck, you won't be sorry you went.

It's a Menelik's Bushbuck and there is no trophy fee. Thats' a license paid up front and it goes to the government.

Yes, $700 for a license. But we only have 2 per year. We have around 20 Menelik's Bushbuck per year. Go figure!

Rich ElliottEthiopia has 15 day minimum for East African plains game hunts. Lesser kudu, S. Gerenuk, N. Grants Gazelle, and Guenther's dik-dik plus some smaller stuff on a first come first served basis due to quotas.
