Bushbuck in Namibia?
Guys,
I am putting this here instead of on the bowhunting page, as the depth of experience and the traffic is substantially greater. I got onto the tail of a recent bushbuck thread, but too late for anyone to read my question.

I hope to get back to Namibia in 2014, and quite interested in BUSHBUCK. I am a longbow hunter, so right there is an issue as most of you are gun hunters and I have a different set of needs. That said, I also recognize that RSA is the more likely place and the north east corner at that. Is anyone able to direct me to an outfitter, or ranch with a solid reputation for this animal and with experience guiding bowhunters?

I don't think you will encounter Bushbuck there, much less huntable by long bow. Maybe PM Roger Coomber (nampom on AR) who is a knowledgeable bowhunter based in Nam.

Steve, your best bet would be South Africa. I don't know of anyone with Bushbuck on a ranch in Namibia.

Hope that helps, feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

If there is a bushbuck in Namibia I suspect it is in the Caprivi. I haven't been there yet unfortunately.

There is some Chobe bushbuck in the Caprivi, but quotas are extremely limted.

I'd guess you are flying via South Africa? If so I'd try to get the Bushbuck done in SA. Probably Limpopo, a few hours from the JHB airport.

Karl, what do you think if one can get one on quota what would be the chance of getting within Longbow range?

Roger, extremely rare... Except maybe now when they are concentrated on islands due to the floods. But the thick bush will make a shot virtually impossible.

I hunted with Peter Johnstone (Rosslyn safaris) in Zimbabwe last August. This is a high fence hunt, 32,000 acres. After you arrive you will not see a fence though. They had some bushbuck.
I shot zebra, kudu, warthog, blue wildebeest and impala. Could have shot a few other critters. They do have good sable but they were out of quota.
The hunting is done out of blinds by waterholes.
The "fence" issue concerned me, but after hunting there and seeing the operation I had no issues at all with it.
If you have any questions PM me. I have no skin in the game here other than sharing what I know.

df06 - I agree Zimbabwe does have good Bushbuck. It is preferable if you can hunt with someone who is setup for bowhunters.

I have excellent Bushbuck and Nyala available in Southern KZN if you keen.
You can be at the hunting grounds within 4 hours of arriving at Joburg and that includes the domestic flight down to Durban.

We have 3 Bushbuck and 3 Nyala in a concession that is largely closed to outsiders. 17" Bushbuck taken there recently and 30" Nyala are regulars there.

If you are patient enough I can get you both species within bow range in a week of hunting.

To All,
Thank you very much for pitching in and providing me with information. As I had said, it is clear that this is the place to go, and you proved me correct. I will take a little time "to think on it" and decided whether I should just (pardon the expression) bite the bullet and commit to another trip to RSA, or give up my idea and go on to other things. The list started there, but didn't end there so I have other "stuff " to work on.

Once again, thank you for you sharing your knowledge with me.

Steve, I dont know Ian Blakeway from The Box H, but I know his partner Hilton Saunders very well, and you would be in good hands with the outfit. Natal is also a brilliant place to hunt bushbuck.
