.416 Remington Ultra Mag
Word around the campfire is that Remington is ready to come out with the .416 RUM .I hear that Wiseman has done the pressure barrels and RCBS has dies. Does anyone know any more about this? What are the thoughts on this caliber?

I don't know but I am thinking if I have to take all that recoil and that one will have an excess of that, then why not take the punishment from a 458 Lott or 505, and be shooting a real hammer...

its going to be a weatherby copy..... the 416 high velosity thing has already been done heck they should have built a rigby and been done with it

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Maybe I am off base, but it seems that Winchester has won the "short" magnum game and Remington has the "big boy" from "big green" market sewn up. In the world where bigger is better, the .416 RUM would be a winner (read "seller" in marketing terms).
That's my $0.02 (or about 0.016 Euro).
Stay well,
Paul

Actually Ray, if they shorten the case, like with the .338RUM, and don't go nuts with the velocity, it will be popular. (As popular as a big-bore can be)

Beltless, .416" diameter 400gr bullets, trim .375H&H length action, low pressure like a Rigby, yet with the powder capacity to pump up the velocity if you want to.

What's not to like?

Plenty not too like. Reduced magazine capacity, more recoil which necessitates more weight in a gun to lug around.

Maybe I'm missing something but what is the big deal about belted cases? Who cares? Doesn't seem to affect feeding, at least not for the last hundred years.

But what the heck, more power to it.

I'll have some info on this round sometime in april. My friend has ordered his barrel (lilja) and is in the process of getting a reamer. I'm sure within a week of getting the barrels he will be beating down my door to chamber it for him.

I'm going to try a 458 RUM probably in april or may unless I can get a barrel sooner.
