338 WM and Dwarf buffalo
I am planing to go hunting the dwarf buffalo in west africa. My biggest caliber is a 338 WM. Is that enough to shoot Dwarf buffalo.

I think Judge G has shot both. Maybe he can make a comparison between a Cape Buff and the Western variety. No experience myself but have heard that they are just as tough.

The answer is yes, it will kill a dwarf buffalo as long as proper bullet placement has been made. The real question is whether or not that caliber is legal on dwarf buffalo in the country that you will be hunting. The better caliber would be at least a .375 in my opinion. Dwarf buffalo weigh in at about 6-800 lbs but can be tough.

I think the 338 is allowed, but I have to check.
I know that the 338 WM is not ideal. But I know very well this rifle and I am very accurate with it. I just wanted to know if anyone had experienced shooting a dwarf buffalo with a 338 WM. Can I be confident shooting with this caliber or do I really need to by a new rifle in a bigger caliber?

I know for a fact that a .338WM will kill a cape buffalo with good bullet placement. My son, who was 14 at the time, dropped one with one shot in 2005. I know, it was illegal, but the buff didn't know it. 240 gr. North Forks at 2750 fps. broke both shoulders and took the aorta right off the heart. the animal lurched foward about ten feet then fell on his nose.

I'm hunting western buffalo in January in Cameroon. Your 338 would probably be fine but a 375 basically is never a bad choice and fills the legal requirements anywhere.

I have spent quite alot of time in the rain forest and your 338 will be adequate for the buff. I would prefer a larger caliber because things can go very wrong there very fast!!! The elephant populations in SE Cameroon are increasing and can make life interesting.

Thank you very much for your answers.
I will try to have a look at a bigger caliber. If I can find a good deal, I will go for it. A 375 HH or a 416 Rigby is always useful...
