yukon deltaAfrica book question
There are 2 books I am considering without having seen them in person. For those that have, what is the difference between them and is one preferred over the other?
1) The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals
Mills,Gus and Hes,Lex
2) The Mammals of the Southern African Subregion
Skinner, John D.; Smithers, Reay H. N.

Safari-Huntyukon,
Skinner and Smithers books has been around for years so that is what I would opt for.
My reccomendation.
Frederik Cocquyt
I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

infinitoI second Fredrick. I have Smithers as well. Very bulky and big, but the definitive read on mammals in the sub-region. It is very academic though, but I like it....gives you all the info you need. It stays at home however, to bulky to carry around.....
Hope this helps. I do not know the first publication you mentioned....

yukon deltaThanks guys. Which edition do you have 1st, 2nd or 3rd? I have found a new updated 3rd edition for what seems a fair price...not to be confused with cheap because it's not!
I do like the fact that the editors are both from the University of Pretoria and the book has submissions from specialists on each mammalian order. I'm definitely looking for a scholarly text not a condensed field guide.
Thanks again.

tsibindi...you may also want to try "LAND MAMMALS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA" by Smithers. First addition 1986.

Russ GouldI haven't read either of those but they sound like pretty dry references...I used to use "Mammals of Southern Africa" but now I recommend "Hunting Africa - A Practical Guide" by Swan et al. It has all the reference stuff for each species incl. distribution maps etc in the appendix...but over half the book is about hunting, rifles, cartridges etc. We have them in stock. Took some doing to get them over here

yukon deltaThanks all. I have many of the various resources that include hunting info but I'm looking for an academic style text. It's not what most people would want but that's what I need.
Thanks again to all for your comments.
