ElCaballeroOne of my all time favorite movies! It has it all sex, violence, adventure and comedy. Definitly one of John Waynes best. The Quiet Man is the only one with a better Wayne preformance. Third is probably McClintock.
The first time I saw Hatari I had never even thought of hunting Africa. Now it consumes me. I will probably be impossible to live with once I have enough pennies saved and get to go once.

prof242I bought the movie years ago when it came out on Beta! Still have a Sony BetaMax in good working order...and a VHS...and a CD player. Whenever I'm feeling low, out comes this movie, or Hellfighters (another great John Wayne flick) to get me into a better mood.

308SakoI actually think I enjoyed this classic more last night than I ever did! What a wondeful life it portrayed, and a fun time. Would have loved to share a campfire or two with those rascals.

IMO, one of his best movies was THE SHOOTIST, and one of his very old one was ANGEL AND THE BAD MAN. I have all Waynes western movies, and have seen them all a dozen times!

His army movies of modern wars sucked! The Cavalry ones were good.
GO ONCE??????????????? You will not go only once! Hunts in Africa is like potato chips, nobody can have just one! You'll be planning you second safari, on the plane comming home!

Die Ou JagterI was thinking about Africa yesterday and my trips or safaris and it reminds me of some friends that just have to spend a couple of weeks at the shore be it Jersey, North Carolina etc.. That is the way with me only the place is Africa. I truly believe I will still go even when I may not be able to hunt.

Hatari helps get thru the year as does other Africian movies and certain hunting DVD or tapes.

Also evenings like tonight when I will present a slide show from last years bufffalo hunt to my Rotary Club.

ElCaballeroBFaucett,
I have one word for you: Brandy!
Brandy played by Michèle Girardon
Mac,
I certainly forgot about those two. They are definitly in the top ten along with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

PalmerI have always wondered if the scenes in Hatari that show the capture of animals (like roping a rhino or buffalo) accurately portray how people used to capture animals for zoos.
At any rate it makes our shooting at them from 70 yards with a 458 lott seem much less dangerous by comparison.
I liked the use of Swahili language in this film.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

James CardwellI stayed up late and watched Hatari last night as well with my wife calling me stupid. (we have TIVO). Great movie. My favorite Duke movie is IN HARMS WAY.

LeanwolffIf you're looking for the finest performance by John Wayne, go no farther than "The Searchers."
And "True Grit" ain't half bad either.
(Yep, I enjoyed "Hatari," ... but it was no "The Searchers," when it came to Wayne's acting.)
My opinion.

Michael RobinsonI liked the mano a mano offhand shooting of beer bottlenecks at 100 yards.
For what? Buffalo eyeballs? Give me a macho man break! As if DG hunting is not difficult enough as it is!
But don't get me wrong, Dallas is my kind of girl! Ay, yay yay!
Still, however, as with most of Hollywood, Hatari, like Born Free, was more Disney than reality.
And I do agree that The Searchers was the best of Howard Hawks, and his sidekick Marion Morrison too.

WillHey, if you can't hit the neck of a beer bottle swinging in the wind with a 458, stay home!

Of course the best scene was the the irate elephant cows. Macho, macho!

HondoLaneI have Hatari on dvd and most of John Wayne movies. Yes, I believe Hatari was a little larger than life, but so was John Wayne it seems. As for the best Duke film...wow that is a tough one; like trying to pick the best rifle. There are a Few standouts imo. The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist, and True Grit are probably my top 3. That may change with moods though; so dont hold me to it.
