Tips for PH's how much on a 16 days hunt in the Selous. ?!

mbb, tipping is going to be a personal thing..DG hunting can be 100/day and if you feel your Ph worked real hard you can give him more...It is between you and Ph.

I´m not a rich man so most of my money is spent once I´ve paid for the hunt. I´d tip 100-200$ if I was satisfied.

If you can afford more then go for it.

If the PH shows signs of not haven received "enough" get another PH as a tip is a tip, not part of the deal.

Another question to go along with this. Would it be a problem to talk with the PH prior to the signing-on of the safari? Just curious about reactions from others.

If you do a search on tipping you'll probably find more info. than you want. This subject has been hauled over the coals several times.

A tip is a gift, give what you feel you can afford..Some give 10% of the total hunt to PH and staff, other give less..Whatever you give is appreciated, end of story, at least with us..

Give it all to the PH and let him sort it out among the staff as their is a pecking order and you can cause problems among them if you give the laundry lady more than the tracker for instance..Then at the end of the hunt, it is customary for the staff to come in a group and think you individually, it is a Safari tradition dating back many years....

I have noticed that hunters tend to tip more money on DG hunts, I am not sure why but probably because the PH lays his a$$ on the line for them everytime they shoot a Buffalo, Lion or elephant or perhaps because folks that hunt this catagory of game are more affluent in the pocket book and can afford more for a tip or a combination of both...I have also observed that a precious few of the most affluent are the cheapest SOBs in the world!!

Which is probably why they are affluent.

And I've seen more of those affluent who are cheap allll the time.

True. And also true that those in the service business, such as doormen, bell hops, maitre d's, cab drivers and waiters, tip more than any big wheeler dealer, because they know how much personal effort goes into making something ordinary into something special.

All too often, I find that these threads become a series of rationalizations to help the cheap skin-flints among us sleep better at night, and not flinch too hard in the morning when they see their cheap-assed reflections in the mirror.

$100 per day or better on a DG safari for excellent to superlative effort and service by the team as a whole. Much, much less, all the way down to nothing--that's right, nothing, I ain't no bleeding heart--for less than that.

i have to agree, i personal know a few very, very well off individuals that squeek when they walk.
I by no means have deep pockets, and i'm hopefully going to get my buff next year, i have to save up for the hunt, so its no different i just add 1k to 2k to the hunt, if it means i have to save another three months so be it. when people work hard they expect more, i know i do, my labor isn't free. take the extra time and save up. squeeky people aggravate me.

Ray, I don’t believe the tip money would always make it to the staff if simply left with the PH. On one trip to Tanzania I ran into the game scout the next year (a whole story in itself) and asked him if he got his tip. The figure he quoted was one third of what was left for him. I know you don’t want to spoil them but sometimes one guy might be particularly helpful and the client might want to tip him more than the others. If I were to leave the staff’s tip with the PH I personally would leave less, he gets his own. I have also seen first hand the squabbling amongst the staff to themselves when some think they were shorted. I don’t have solution just observations.
