Next month I will going back to the Caprivi for an elephant hunt. I have had a Global Rescue membership for a long time, but I was curious does buy additional trip, medical or luggage/gun insurance?

I had Travel Guard on my last trip (way back in 2007) on advice of my travel agent Kathi Klimes but did not make a claim so I can't say how good it is. My homeowner's agent confirmed I had enough coverage for the guns I was taking as well.

Don't rely on my advice, but I think you are too late to get "trip insurance". That usually has to be booked very shortly after you book the trip, for obvious reasons from the carrier's standpoint.

You can and should, in my opinion, buy a medical evacuation policy, but sounds like you have that covered.

Depending on the value of your rifles, you can get a policy on those as well. That's just up to you. I do. It's pretty cheap.

Both MedJet and Global Rescue cover medical evacuation, with slight differences between them. Travel Guard also includes the same evac in their packages also. Their World Service Center is available 24/7 at 1-800-826-4919 to actually answer any questions you might have.

Generally, you have to buy your travel insurance within two weeks to have 100% refundable coverage for any reason. After that, the gold and silver packages are still available which cover most of the things the most expensive one does.

My Gold package for next weeks trip has a $500,000 limit for medical evac and return of remains.

I am a firm believer in travel Guard, we have bought it on several trips and unfortunately had to use it last year in SA when my wife broke her ankle on the first hunting day. Charges for hospital stay and surgery were promptly reimbursed and they even paid full fare for 2 business class tickets for our return trip as it was medically necessary. Going to Zim in less than 2 weeks and we have another Travel Guard policy this time as well.

I chose Travel Guard insurance on my last trip and if I recall it was only around $150. It turned out that while we were in RSA last fall, there was a transport strike looming and eventually occurred. We got out of country a day early (there were fuel trucks on fire going into JNB) and had to leave from a point of departure that wasn't on our original itinerary. It took a bit to get all of the paperwork together but Travel Express paid for my extra flight leg which turned out to be more than what I paid for the insurance. Works for me!

thank God my Medicare supplement covers ALL medical expenses abroad so i only have to pay for Global Rescue evac insurance...damn good deal.
