I voted for sable, but I was tempted to vote "other" and go for the Lord Derby as my choice.. Nothing compares to those 2.

I vote for the Kudu, but I'd like another antelope hunting one day (it's free to dream-sigh-jejej) is the oryx.

I voted for the greater kudu. The spiral horns rule, and greater kudu are the most spectacular of the spiral-horned species, IMHO.

There is something about the kudu's face, with its slender lines and white chevrons, and his neck with its shaggy mane hanging down, and of course his horns, with their white tips seeming to cork-screw crazily yet gracefully upwards and outwards into the air, that just does it for me.

I remember when I was a kid, long before I knew one African antelope from another, how struck I was by the power and beauty of a greater kudu mount on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

I also think that impala are lovely animals and should be counted among the most beautiful of antelope species. I cannot help but think that they would be esteemed much more highly if they were more rarely encountered.

Sable - out of our world - only in Africa - nothing like it whereabouts

Sable most majestic especially when you see a big one live and in person.

Although, given the choice between a sable or a bongo, for my own trophy room, I'd go with a bongo.

I have to agree with PSmith. Coming upon a big bull sable is a majestic sight. I think the bongo is the most beautiful though and the Mt. Nyala the most desirable and perhaps the pinnacle of a safari hunting career.

I picked the sable. The first one I ever saw was a coal-black bull in the Caprivi, standing elevated on a small mound with his head held high and chest seemingly flexed, surveying his domain. Definitely majestic, and a sight I hope I never forget.

There is also something very striking about a kudu standing among the rocks on a hillside, horns corkscrewing skyward, glaring down at you. And then, he is gone.

I of course voted for Kudu, but a Bongo is up there, especially for non hunters, appearance wise.

And of course Lord Derby Eland.

Bongo with Kudu, Nyala, Sable, and Roan close seconds.

I've never hunted africa but hope to some day. I would say one of the top things on my list is a bushbuck. I don't know what it is, but they are awesome. Bongos are pretty damn amazing too, but something I'll never hunt, they're a little pricey. Merry Christmas everyone.

As a follow up to this, I would say (from personal experience) the most majestic is for sure the 45" sable bull that knows he isn't on your license, and you don't have $3,500 anyway.

This is a very tough call as they all have a quality about them. The Greater Kudu however carries a sheer elegance bout him where ever he is found.

I voted for the kudu... The grey ghost almost eluded me... But a well placed shot at 400yds and he was mine...
The sable has eluded me and I look forward to 09's Selous hunt for him..

The Sable is a truly elegant beast, but if the (Greater) Kudu were as rare as the Sable, and the Sable as common as the Kudu, I doubt that anyone would mention any antelope other than the Kudu. It's five foot spiral horns atop its tall, slender, and muscular body simply scream "Africa!"

Call me contrary but I've always had a soft spot for a Waterbuck, not knocking the others, just that the Waterbuck is my favourite.

I have been fortunate to hunt both and take both. I do think there is no more magestic animal then the Sable. Like the Kudu, he is there one moment and gone the next. My vote was for the sable.

Hundreds of African antelopes?? Have they invented some new ones??

Of the 170 or so I know of the one I find most "majestic" is not the one I suspect meets your "which antelope would most impress a non-hunter" criteria.

To me, the most majestic is the sable, but I suspect most non-hunters would be more impressed by the kudu.

Or if it's horns that trip your trigger...

I wanted a Kudu, but no luck on a good trophy. I did see some nice Sable, but my pocketbook was light. The Gemsbcuk is pretty majestic though.

I think many of the African antelope can be very visually captivating. People seem to especially be captivated by big spiral horns, which gives the kudu the nod, but I would agree that the Bongo is just a bit more exciting and rare (got to love the orange coat too). Also, if we factor in that most people shoulder mount a kudu and life-size mount a bongo, I think the life-size mounts are a bit more striking to a non-hunter (most of whom are accustom to the deer-on-the-wall idea).

In a broader sense, I think any African antelope will impress non-hunters (assuming they don't have ill feelings towards hunting) since a majority of people have never seen or heard of many of these animals. Given the three animals listed, Mt. Nyala, Kudu, and Sable, I would bet a large amount of people would say they have only heard of one of those animals - the sable- and would describe it to you as an animal that looks like a ferret or a weasel (the North-American sable).


Long story short - BONGO ANTELOPE

I have other favorites, I love aquatic antelope and eland, which are not to vote, but also for my count.

I've encountered both Greater Kudu and Sable in the field. The sheer power, grace and commanding presence of the Sable gets my vote.

Again, with acknowlegement of the beauty and robustness Sable, the Greater Kudu has to be the answer to this question.

I've picked the sable. Cover the horns on a photo of a bull kudu and the animal looks lilke a camel to me. A bull sable without horns, however, is still a magnificent beast. In real life, neither is the smartest of the many African antelope.

I have never hunted Africa, and probably never will.

But aside from the Cape Buffalo, the only other animals that interest me, are, and in this order:
1. Greater kudu.
2. An Eland Bull, any Eland bull.
3. Gemsbok.

I voted "Other". While I've hunted kudu twice, taking one good one, and hope to live to hunt them again, I didn't vote kudu. Sable is pretty high on my wishlist, an awsome trophy but... if money where no object I'd book a Lord Derby Eland hunt.

What about him?

I voted for the kudu but how can you really choose? The sable is awsome along with a few others and I can't stop admiring my kafue lechwe. Adrian
