I'll be hunting Buff in May in Zim and was planning on using my .375 H&H with 300 Gr. Northfork bullets. Load is 78Grs. of H-4350. I'll have Barnes solids behind the Northfork in the magazine. What do you guys with Buff hunting experience think of this combination? I've heard good things about the Northfork bullets but have no experience with them on Buff. I figured it would be great to hear some first hand experiences. Thanks

I have used only the North Fork flat nose solids and I've used them on elephants and one buff. The flat nose solids penetrate more than is needed for buff. The cup point solids penetrate about 20% less and give a better wound channel and this is how I would go.

I think very highly of North Fork bullets. I would suggest using North Fork's cup point solid behind your soft. Plenty of penetration reported by those who have used them and better wound channel than any other solid style bullet.

North Forks have been very accurate for me as well.

I think the North Fork softs are the best softs made today. However, I would definitely upgrade from the Barnes to the North Fork solids for lower pressure, more shock and better penetration.

Ditto on what JPK said. There are many of us who feel that using all premium softs such as the North Forks is all that is necessary for buff. If you are not of this thinking, then I would go with the soft followed by cup point route. Mike developed the cup point specifically for hunting buffalo.

I loaded 71 gr rx 15 behind the NF 300 soft and the 300 gr solid, shooting 6 shots, 3 soft and 3 solid, into very small group, actually one large ragged hole at 100 yards at 2600 fps+.

Shot buff with soft and it was a picture perfect mushroom and retained 287 gr.

My PH recommended swift a frame, but he was greatly impressed with the NF.

I wish he would make a soft for 470 NE.

Thanks guys for all the info. The barnes solids do group the same as the Northfork softs.

Every Barnes solid I have shot into a buffalo with my .375 H&H went completely through with small wound channel.

I think I might switch to North Fork cup nose solid.

But having said that. Barnes X backed by Barnes solids has always worked very well for me!!!

I only have one buffalo under my belt, but it was a single front chest shot w/ a 380gr/404 NF. The buff went down & styaed down. Plus the accuracy is oustanding, I'm sold on them.

North Fork CPS have accounted for 4 one shot kills on buff. Two in Zambia and Two in Tanzania. Exellent results in fact.

What caliber did you use?

Two were with the 416 Taylor, two were with the king of all big game cartridges, a 404 Jeffery.
