The Mistaken Himba
We don't have an African cultural section, however, this article could not be more wrong regarding Namibia's Himba. They wouldn't survive without the tourism industry (and unfortunately that also includes the European sex tourism industry) and they do embrace modern things, just behind the scenes. The only thing modern they reject is modern laws and law enforcement.

Amazing how starry eyed photojournalists can get it all wrong.

Use Enough Gun
I've been to a Himba village in the very northwestern part of Namibia and there were a number of European tourists visiting as well. We toured the village and bought some items from the Himba women. Village life was going on as usual while we were there. The village was very close to our hunting lodge, but I understand that it had been used for films and other venues.

The stories you hear from the car rental folks is nothing short of stomach turning. Never purchase a used roof tent in Namibia...

Eeker

I have heard through the political grapevine that the Kunene Regional Governor has passed a law that empowers the Conservancies the right to evict non-member squatters from wilderness areas and the power to evict non-members from their land. The net result is the Himba are packing up and moving back to their tribal lands further north. This should clean up much of the social problems than have resulted from the Himba presence and wildlife conservationists are pleased as poaching should decrease as a result.

Nothing against the Himba, but they have not exactly endeared themselves with the Herero and Damara or with conservationists.

Won't soon forget running into my first Himba woman pushing a shopping cart in a grocery store in Otjiwarongo.

Cool

There's two things that smell like dead fish, and one of them is dead fish!
