No Mahenge for Me This Year After All
After 9 months of planning and preparation I broke my pelvis with 17 days to go! I fell from the 3rd step of a step ladder onto the ground, which on our ranch is "rock" with a fine layer of dust and horse poop. While not "SERIOUS" fractures, any small misstep is considerably painful. I can move ok on crutches most of the time, but I can't even imagine a 27+ hour flight (in coach). I did it last year (RSA) in good health and was miserable. My situation however, could have been much worse. I was alone - my wife had gone horseback camping up in the Sierras - and could have lain there for 3 days before she returned. Or, I could have never gotten up.Eeker
So, boys! Don't follow my example with ladders. Do follow my example and BUY TRIP INSURANCE. You never know.
I don't think I felt this bad when Wife #1 & I split.

Sorry to hear that.

Glad that you are doing well.

Now, you'll have lots more to look forward to next year Smiler

I've had a broken foot and a broken wrist from falling off of small ladders. The time I came down from a 24 footer- Nothing!
I can only imagine the pain you must be in. Not from the pelvis but from the disappointment of having to postpone.
Go easy on the recovery. There will be next year.

Dave, Lousy Luck. Congratulations on being covered, that just gives you some extra time to save for more trophy fees or days hunting! Best wishes toward your quick recovery. Hugh

Wow ... what a tough break!

Nothing to do now but rest, relax, get better and plan an even better safari!

(Thank Heavens for "malice of forethought" on the trip insurance.)

Best wishes on a speedy and complete recovery.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Get well soon, Africa will still be there.

PS. Congratulations on having the forethought to purchase trip insurance. thumb

Dave,

I am very sorry to hear of your accident. We all wish you a quick recovery.

You have the right attitude, always look at the bright side, as it could have been worse.

Dave, you're in our prayers. We've have two or three this year of our AR members that have had to cancel at "the last minute" due to accident and illness. Africa will welcome you back in the future.

Thank you all, very much for your kind words and wishes. They really do help. As Frank said, the pain in my groin doesn't come close to comparing to the disappointment of not going. Although I must admit, my natural optimism tells me I'll receive some kind of "miracle cure" or someone will "lay hands on me" and I'll be at the NWA counter next Wednesday morning. nut
And, a special thumb to Saeed. In case there may be someone out there who doesn't know it already, Saeed is a very special man. Not only does he live life to its fullest, he does so with kindness, generosity, and humility. A true Prince among men.
Thank you all, again.

Dave,

That really is a bummer. Maybe if you have to reschedule the hunt will be better than it would have been now. Sometime stuff happens for a reason.

Well, I'm glad to see you resigned from running for idiot of the year. (for other readers, please see related thread and my post in "Miscellaneous Topics"). I guess all my negativity had some truth to it. Sorry you can't make the trip, but it was obvious to everyone but you from your first post in Misc Topics.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

Thanks for the wishes, but I think you could still get out-voted on that if we took a poll (ask my wife, for one) lol

Sorry about that...if you were here we could cry in our beer together.
We would be finishing up our RSA portion of the safari today and on the way to Cape Town for a few days of drinking and wahoo! Instead the doc said wife's blood count was low and we could not go.
You get well and I will get wife back running again and who in hell knows...we might all be on the same plane for Africa next year!
Heal up strong, quick and... better tomorrows!
