Robert johnsonI know Greg very well. He has went on more self guided hunt in Southern Africa then any outer person I know. This type of hunt is only for the type of hunter that truly enjoys the jungle! You are not going to fill your trophy room. Usually you will have to walk 3-7 day into the Jungle just to get to a hunting area! Greg told me the average hunter looses 20-25 pond during a 3 week hunt!
If you want more info on Greg and these hunts PM me with your phone number.
While I have never done this type of hunt, I have hunted in Cameroon. It is possible to hunt on your own, but one must remember that the best hunting areas are assigned to the professionals in the country. The "Hunt On Your Own" or public areas are mediocre in quality to say the least.
Additionaly, if you are not fluent in French, you won't even get out of the airport. You will be mobed by a couple hundred people wanting to carry everything for you and if you cn't communicate, everything you own will walk off in front of you eyes. You will need to arrange transportation, which means either hiring a car or buying one and driving yourself. Without an international driving license, that ain't gonna be easy. And you will need to arrange trackers, skinners etc... If you have never hunted the jungle you would be out of yur league just taking off on your own you are gonna need local help.
You will need to arrange all gun permits, visa and health certificates from the consuate of the country you want to hunt. In Cameroon, these documents cost about $1500.
With all the costs in both time and money, a hunt on your own will end up costing more in both than an outfitted hunt will. If you want to hunt central west Africa, I'd recommend an outfitted hunt first and maybe a do-it-youself hunt after. That way you get to see the obstacles you are up against first.
My 2 cents worth.

AfrikaanderThank you for all your advices, Mac ...
In fact because of those stated reasons is why I am looking for a reccomended & experienced guy that would set up self organized hunts ...
About the less than standard level of the animals that can be found in those aereas, actually I am much interested in the quality of the hunt itself rather than the quality of the potential trophies ... so far this type of hunts are just what I am looking for, a real challenge !
