First, I apologize for posting this here, but I know you Texans will find it here, and not necessarily in Walter's foum ...

I'm flying in to DFW in a couple of weeks to spend three or four days with my daughter, who is a junior at Baylor.
I'm thinking we want to hit the Amon Carter and Kimbell Museums, then do some shopping and BBQ eating in the Fort Worth Stockyards district. After that, I want to see the Baylor campus down in Waco, and maybe look up some ancestors' grave sited in Comanche. Lots of ground to cover.
Any other particular suggestions, especially places to eat a truly fine steak and/or traditional BBQ? I plan a return trip to Texas when I have a lot more time.

Angelo's Barbeque in downtown Ft Worth and Cattleman's Steakhouse at the Ft Worth stockyards were always listed in the top 10. I haven't lived there in awhile and there may be newer, more trendy restaurants. But I do go back a couple of times a year to see family. For old Ft Worth ambiance these are recommended.

For Mexican it used to be that Joe T Garcia's was recommended but I preferred "The Original" on Camp Bowie Blvd. There's also a Cabela's close to the DFW airport.

Oh damn, I forgot about Cabelas. That means a gun library with double rifles ...

Second that! Angelo's is on White Settlement Road, west of downtown.

If you go down to Waco to see Baylor be sure and do the Texas Ranger Museum. Its not far from campus right on I-35. Definitely worth it and some super historical guns.

Well, if your calendar works out, DSC is having their monthly meeting on 4/21. It's open to the public and fellow AR members are always in attendance.

If in Ft Worth stockyards area must eat at Tim Love's Lonesome Dove Bistro for dinner. 2yrs ago while at DSC we drove to Ft Worth (got lost) and it was worth it in spades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing thing to do would be taking me to Bob's Steak and Chop House !! I can be ready in no time !

If you're driving down to Waco, be sure and stop in the little town of West(McLennon County), Tx. The Czech Stop there is well-advertised on I-35 and has kolaches and cinammon rolls that are TO DIE FOR!

I went to grad school at Baylor and have driven I-35 to/from Dallas/Fort Worth countless times.

Second the votes for Del Frisco (in Fort Worth), Angelo's BBQ, the Czech place in West, the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. I'd add the Beretta store in Dallas and maybe a Rangers game in Arlington, it's a great ballpark.

Check out ML Leddy's down at the stockyards. Very good boot makers. Pricey but good. I have several pair and love them. Cool shop just to look in too.

I like the steak at Del Frisco's alot and Reata is pretty good too. Sushi at Piranhas in Fort Worth is very good also.

I found the antelope at the "Mansion at/on Turtle Creek" to be spectacular. Dean Fearing was the Chef when I was there, a few years ago

I went to vet school and did my surgery residency at Texas A&M. I am from Jacksboro. I drove the same stretch as you for years.

Back in 80's & early 90's not much traffic...now days...you can sit in stand-still traffic in the middle of cotton/corn fields!!!

Maybe we passed each other on the road!

LOL!!! Easily one of the best there is. And I'm a steak connoisseur...my family are cattle ranchers and my father has his own family feedlot.

I can't argue with any of the options listed. Also, try Health Camp in Waco for burgers. Don't let the name fool you.

I don't know much about Commanche other than passing through a few hundred times. If you're a wine guy, try Becker Vineyards.

Re: West, Texas and kolaches

While the Czech Stop next to the interstate isn't bad, there are several other deserving sellers of the pastry that should have won the West in West. The Czech Stop is pretty much open 24 hours but if you're in West during regular business hours, instead of turning right into the Czech Stop, go a couple of blocks east on Oak St(the E-W exit St off I-30) and on the right is another kolache shop, The Old Czech Smokehouse and Bakery (the bakery is the door on the right as you face the building0. Their kolaches and rolls are better than those of the Czech Stop IMO. Hard to beat their poppy seed rolls (acquired taste) and various pecan delights. Also, during regular business hours, drive the 4 or 5 more blocks to downtown West and the Village Bakery.

Nemecek's meat market (East side of downtown) has some good products as well.

Wife and I went to the grand opening Friday night of his newest here in Denton--The Love Shack. It's a burger joint and they're pretty tastey, if I do say so!!!
Tim grew up here in Denton, so it was a coming home of sorts.

Best places to eat...
Hop in the car, and head out of town. Find a joint with a tin roof and picnic tables out front. Preferably one with a parking lot for vehicles and hitching posts for the horses (there's one near Sealy, west of Houston on I 10 so I know they are still around. I know this is a long way from DFW, but should still apply to the state in general). All the locals eat at these places. Priced right too.

I don't think you knew this, but my folks are in the restaurant biz...my stepdad grew up in the Pappas family's first restaurant, "strawberry patch" which grew into Pappas brothers's steakhouse...he was with them for years!

Vanderhoef, he also has a burger joint near the Bistro in Ft Worth, never ate there but I am sure it is good.

For steaks Bob's Steak House in either Ft. Worth or Dallas. BBQ at the Stock Yards at Cooper's BBQ.

Van, the one in the stockyards is the Love Shack also I guess the first one. The White Elephant is at another location.

Guys, I'm taking detailed notes. Sounds like at least three great steak houses and some very fine BBQ. Can't wait to be back in Texas!

I have spent the last decade ++ commuting to Waco to visit my 3 children all Baylor Bears. I too will be making the pilgrimage once again in a couple of weeks for my middle child's graduate school graduation. We almost always end up at George's sometime during the visit. All the other suggestions above re good too, Czeh Stop, Pappas Bros., Dr. Pepper museum, Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco. Have fun...hope the weather is good

Besides just places to eat for entertainment I would suggest the Fort Worth Zoo. It is almost always voted in the top 10 zoos in the country. Also the Dallas World Aquarium is amazing. Even though it is call a aquarium it is much much more than that. It is more like a full indoor zoo. When you go inside you forget that you are in a building and it feels like you are walking through the rainforest of South America. If you are a fan of animals these are two cant miss attractions.

Doc, yep we probably did. I was in Waco from 1990 to 1995, then Fort Worth and Cedar Hill from 1997 to 2001.

Have any of y'all been to the BBQ place in Cyclone Texas?

In Fort Worth, my good friend Richard King has a restaurant that was voted one of the 10 Best Restaurants in America by Bon Appetit magazine and they always have a fine steak or two on their ever changing menu. The place is called Ellerbe Fine Foods. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
If you want good Mexican food Don't go to Joe T's. The ambiance is great as are the margaritas, but you can get better food at dozens of places. My three suggestions are; The Original, El Asadero and Benito's.

My daughter is graduating in May with a graduate degree in Taxation from Baylor so I hang around Waco a bit myself... try George's while you are there. Nothing better than a Big O and a Crybaby burger with fried okra!
