Hi Folks - just calling on your expertise regarding 'must haves' for my library of sporting books.

I've recently been bitten by the tales of past adventurers and really want to add to my collection. It should be added that these books will be for reading rather than 'collection'! What titles and authors should I be hunting? Primarily interested in Non-Fiction - but understand that there are some fiction titles ('J n McNab') that need inclusion!

Books by Samuel Baker.

Captsick's books - very good reads.

John Burger wrote some very readable books.

Jim Sutherland.

Pease's "The Book of the Lion". Still considered one of the top books for lion hunting.

Kevin Robertson's books on buffalo and shot placement.

And don't forget Teddy Roosevelt's book on his African Safari.

Elmer Keith's "Safari" is a good read, but very few were printed. Elmer's other books for hunting in the US.

Gordon Cummings book.

For Asia, Jim Corbett, Ken Anderson and John Brandt.

That will get you started....

Some love him and some hate him, but I find Capstick's books to be both informative and enjoyable.

Richard Harlands "The Hunting Imperative" and "African Epic" are about as good as it gets, also anything by Pondoro Taylor or J.A.Hunter.All are available from Roland Ward in Joberg by mail order.Also check out "A Pioneering Hunter" and "The Hunting Blackbeards of Botswana" Both are by Brian Marsh and are seriously good reads,they are also available from the above source.

Have so far found a few of Corbetts, The Call of the man-eater by Anderson, couple of J H Williams (and one by his wife) plus a load of others that look to make some seriously good reading.

Just finishing reading The Wildest Game by Peter Ryhiner & Daniel Mannix which I would highly recommend.

Have just started reading " A Bullet well Placed" by Johnny Chilton - so far a very enjoyable read. Also Flack's Heart of a an African Hunter is very good.

To me the "must haves" are more the reference types such as :

Perfect Shot, African Hunter the orginal & II, Safari Rifles, Rifles for Africa, Dangerous Game Rifles, Boddington on Buffalo DVD (his Best), Hunting the African Elephant - Buzz Charlton DVD

The rest depend on your personal tastes.

This book alone is enough reasons for learning Swedish -NOT joking.

The Swede von Otter was the british miitary chief in Turcana (north east Kenya) for about 4 years, starting in the end of WW I. He died there in Black Water fever. The book is actually is diaries, published after his death. Turcana was and still is Wild!

The problems in Darfour can be tracked back to von Otters days.
