After reading a few recent articles, I've become very intrigued by Cahora Bassa. It certainly seems to be a great location for BIG crocs which would be a priority.
It seems to me that hunting Cahora Bassa is quite off the beaten track in "wild" Africa which is a big plus for me.
Does anyone have any experience hunting around Cahora Bassa? Any first hand knowledge of the area and opportunities there would be appreciated. In particular I'd be interested to hear about the croc and leopard hunting opportunities.
A good opportunity for leopard and big crocs would be a dream!

I hunted the south shore about 12-14 years ago. It has a LOT of big crocs plus hippo. Don’t know about leopard. Definitely wild Africa. I shot a 15 footer and so did my buddy- but his was missing about 1 1/2’ of it’s tail, bitten off when he was younger. His was so old about half it’s teeth were missing. Mine had fresh wounds all over it’s body from fighting and claws and back scales from whatever challenged it in his stomach. The outfitter/PH doesn’t have a concession there anymore.

Contact Mark Haldane with Zambezi Delta Safaris, he can make it happen. Some of our friends (4) hunted there before meeting us in Coutada 11, all of them got huge crocs.

Had a great hunt and took an over 14 footer a couple o years ago. Definately a remote hunt and even had hippos in camp one morning.

I hunted the area with Carel Maartens about 10 years ago, INCREDIBLE and a very tough area to get to... drive from Lusaka across Zambia, and to 4 corners where Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozi come together, down the Luangua Park, to Luangua crossing, onto a speedboat and 2 hours down to camp on the Zambizi. I had exactly the same experience as JDollar on baited, blind crocs...my largest was 14'8' with a bloody tail from where it dives down to the point... so 12-18" missing!! This area is now owned by Russell Lovemore of Safari International, Mozambique and East Cape. Excellent Camp and concession area, I would hunt there again in a heartbeat. I took 2 huge Crocs, both with deformed mouths from fighting, huge Hippo and a Gold Medal Bushbuck. Yes, there are leopard and Lion on quota and some Buff and Elephant from "tribal needs"... Note, Simon Rogers buys quotas from Russell...be aware!!

CheerZ,
Thank you for the information! Your post raises a good point...
Which operators actually own/have rights to concessions on Cahora Bassa and which buy quota from others?

Thank you 470 Eddy for the kind words about my area. I just want to set the record straight. Simon Rodger has his own area right across from mine. It is also common practice for outfitters to buy quota from each other if needed. It is a perfectly legal practice. Simon runs a first class operation of his own on his own area. I hope that clears up any uncertainty.

Buffalo will be much better on the south bank (Simons area).

I’ve hunted the area many times, my dads also been hunting the area for over 20 years now. The concession belongs to Simon Rodger with Safaris De Mozambique. Absolutely first class animals and first class lodging with Simon. They do croc hunts pretty much 24/7 with huge success with crocs averaging 14ft+. I personally shot an over 15 footer, just shy of 16 feet a few years back. Last summer I got another over 14 footer and a GORGEOUS leopard plus several incredible buff, a hyena and massive hippo. The area is gorgeous with so much incredible wildlife to see always. That’s one spot I will always return to when on safari in Moz. Simon Rodger is the best of the best and his PHs continue to put me on world class game. I’ve made the record book twice hunting with him! 100% you have to check them out!

Hunted there twice 2002 and 2013 and have been booking hunts there for 21 years. The Crocs and Buffalo there are exceptional.
