I have some questions about what might be an odd/different type of hunt. I am a 61year old teacher who is not in the best of shape, 20yrs ago I went on a 20 day two country (Zimbabwe/Namibia) hunt. FWIW, I used black powder and with the exception of a kudu in Namibia don’t believe that it cost me any animals. The kudu, which was a little larger than the one I shot in Zimbabwe, was 150yds away and I decided not to shoot. I want to go back!
I live in a smallish condo. Most of my trophies are scattered among friends’ houses. I don’t care about bringing back a bunch of trophies. There are three animals that I would like to take: an eland cow, a zebra and a bushbuck. If I can get a better ‘deal’ in Namibia I might give up a chance for a bushbuck. But I would like to shoot more animals. I have read about cull hunts, but I believe these are basically night hunts where you shoot does in the head. I’m not interested in that! What I would like to find is somewhere there are one horned kudus or crippled bontebucks or maybe some kind of older buck that will never make a trophy. I don’t mind shooting some cows/does, but want horns also, although I plan on leaving them in Africa. I would prefer to hunt hides. Because I’m a teacher I have more time than money, but would also prefer to stay as long as possible. I want to stay in a clean comfortable place, but it doesn’t have to be a super luxurious one. I have around $4k to $5k (max) to spend +tip. I could possibly go this June or July 2009, but I am planning on 2010. I might say that, because I am a teacher, during most most of June all and all of July plus a week in August I could leave on very little notice. The cost of airline tickets might nix this though. What suggestions might you have? Thanks, capt david

The biggest problem I see is that it is going to cost you $2,000-$2,500 just to fly there. $300 per day would be pretty cheap for daily rates. So on a 7 day hunt you are in for $4,100-$4,500 already without a single trophy fee.

You would need a super cheap flight special and a super cheap cull/cancelation hunt to try and squeeze this.

Possible but very difficult in my opinion.

You need to go to your local SCI yearly banquet/auction and what you want to do is well within the realm of possibility. Also, short notice hunts appear on this and other forums at quite reasonable prices.

Actually, I know a very amiable PH in RSA that does cull hunts that I think would fall within your price range though it would only be 7 to 10 days and not 2 or 3 weeks.

That can be done. That is not a huge budget, but it is definitely doable.

Find a friend and bring him for a 2x1 hunt. You are not picky on trophy quality, so a 7-day hunt is enough time to do this. Here are two packages with the Gras Ranch that are close to your budget.
