Nat Geo Wild: War Elephants
Interesting show about traumatized elephant from bush wars that are aggressive. Filmed in Gorongosa National Park. Amazing thing is the number of tuskless. Damn there are as many tuskless as tusked cows. Some of the herds seem to be well more than 50% tuskless. Makes my trigger finger itch.

There are more tuskless elephants in Tanzania than with tusks!

At least that is what we have been seeing!

The next great elephant hunting opportunity? Don't have to worry about the USFWS ivory importation ban.

I remember years ago we had to look at many herds before one could find a tuskless cow to shoot.

Now it is the exception to find one WITH tusks!!

But you cannot shoot anything female in Tanzania. Not even tuskless.

I won't question their game managment, but how can they do it without at least considering the females?

Maybe they do not have quite adequate control over poaching, and the poachers takes care of the 'excess' females? Big Grin This, if we talk about ivory poachers, will also select for tusked females, and so increase the % tusk-less elephants in the population.

One can cure:

Lack of knowledge – by instruction. Lack of skills – by practice. Lack of experience – by time doing it.

One cannot cure:

Stupidity – nothing helps! Anti hunting sentiments – nothing helps! Put-‘n-Take Outfitters – money rules!

My very long ago ancestors needed and loved to eat meat. Today I still hunt!

Speaking of Natl Geo, has anyone but me gotten a "we need money to stop the Elephant poaching" e-mail? Looks like they're next into the save the Elephant business.

Watched it, very fascinating. Looked up the scientist on the show, not surprised to find out she's against elephant hunting.
