How far back would you say those folks are sitting from the sable?

A pretty good ways, but it doesn't detract from the trophy. It would have been a better picture if they had been sitting about fifty feet to the left. It still would have been a big sable. I wonder where they were hunting.

What aggravates me is that I had almost convinced myself that I really didn't have to hunt a sable in 2008. Then this photo shows up.

It was taken in Zambia but not sure of specific area. Maybe Mulobezi GMA next to Kafue Nat Park? Anyone know? Definitely the trophy of a lifetime and a truly magnificent specimen.

Was with Piet Swanapoel and friends many, many years ago when I took my first four-footed animal, a 45 inch sable. Took a 40-inch cape buffalo the next day. Events transformed a bird hunter into a big game hunter.

That is a truly magnificent sable the likes of which most of us will never see. On occasion several areas in Zambia do turn out those monster sable and the concessions around the Kafue park are some of the best. I was in camp in RSA this year with a Spaniard that had taken a 51"x52" but I can't remember the concession. We also had a client take a 50" in Tondwa in '04. The really big ones are out there but I wouldn't think anyone should book a safari thinking there was even a remote possibility of shooting something of that caliber.

Absolutely astounding! Never ever had "buck fever" in my hunting career, but may have had hesitation on that one. Never knew they got so large, horns and body--both.
