I Did It!!!!

LV EricI Did It!!!!
I ordered a bespoke double rifle from a top top top gun builder, Peter Hofer and I have been friends for years and he had 12-13 guns with him this year, the one I really wanted is finished and fits me perfectly but 1.2 million Euros or about $1,600,000 is a bit strong for me right now but i have a few deals in the mix so I never rule anything out.
But back to what I did order is a 3" 500 nitro sidelock engraved with a family of tigers on one side and the guys riding the elepnants hunting tigers on the other side where they would surround the tiger. It will have a little bit of gold, its a 5 year project so there is plenty of time for design work and graphics/engraving. I got my first double at SCI so by the time comes i'll know what i want from peter, on a bolt action I've had so much experience I know 100% what i want doubles are uncharted water for me. I'm looking foward to learning about them. Perhaps I'll join that shoot on thanksgiving? like last year now that I have a gun.
sorry about the spelling,
I missed that class.

Eric,
You recently posted what I quoted below, and I am a bit confused. Is the boxlock you bought while at SCI also made by Hofer?

I cant remember the brand right now I just know the gun pointed real good and the length of pull was perfect, its a working gun, brand new engraved nothing to sexy but it will be a great starter double gun, soon as I get it, i'mm post the maker I know its in the UK.
I'm leaving for Hawaii with Alan Vincent (my PH/best friend) for a few days of nice weather and no work.
Its pathetic I cant remember the maker of the gun, its a working gun but just boarderline a little nicet or side lock and then I would be reluctant to take it hunting, but I WILL shoot a pile of elephants with this gun.
It sounds like you'll be having a lot of fun with these doubles in the future.

LV EricThe double I bought at SCI isnt a Hofer, he was a guest in my home in Vegas for 2 nights, his guns are pure art,
I boughta jeffries(SP?) I'll get it this week, its a working gun, I wanted something that pointed nicely and wasnt 100K for my first double, like anything start with an entry level piece then move up from there, I havent ever shot a double but I am veery capable with a gun and know when something feels good this gun did, i didnt go to SCI with the intention of buying a gun, but the price was ok, it pointed great, LOP is perfect, 3" 500 nitro is good, i didnt want a 470, a 600 would have been perfect.
I will need alot of practice with this gun and since I'm not going to africa this year-because my back is still bad, 2 operations and one to go, i should be able to go next year, but I will be able to shoot this year alot and get used to it. So i used my hunting $$$ on a gun insead, actually it was cheaper than the hunts I go on.
the last 5 elephants i shot were off hand the last was open sights, so useing a double will be cool.
I made a post about ordering a bespoke double and this is the first step in that direction,
peter Hofer is a good friend when I do order a gun from him it wont be a hunting gun.

Congratulations on your "new" vintage rifle. I imagine it is a vintage, though Jeffrey may be making new ones again (?).
It would be a W.J. Jeffrey, not a "jeffries".
A .500 3" is a pretty ideal elephant chambering so I think you will be having lots of fun with it, when you next venture to Africa after ollie.

hell i dont know what it is,

its brand new, problem is i'm in LA and my FFL guy is in Vegas, so I'm gonna have it shipped there-no waiting period. soon as i get to vegas perhaps tomarrow. i'm excited, there wasnt time to get it before we went to hawaii to freeze and I have been in LA since.
Hawaii was 53 with the wind chill factor i the AM, it was so cold i couldnt sit outside to use the wireless laptop until after 11 am , the afternoons were ok and nights it was better to sit inside, it rained like hell to, i had never seen rain like that in Hawaii, ive been therre around 12 times.

formerflyerYes, it has been a little cold and kind of sloppy here lately. Rain on and off, pretty heavy at times. Sometimes it gets cold enough that you can't wear shorts comfortably, and once or twice my better half has resorted to a jacket. Not very nice when you're coming to the tropics to warm up, I'm sure.
On the other hand, it beats living in upstate New York. You don't have to shovel rain.

Jim ManionPaul-I usually fall into the anti safe queen camp. But take a look at this:
http://www.hoferwaffen.com/hofer_1.php?lang=enI think what Eric is buying it for really for the artistic/investment value. A working mechanical piece of art, but a one of a kind piece nonetheless.

577NitroExpressThe horror!
It's like buying a Ferrari or an original 427 Ford Cobra and parking it in the garage.

In any regards, it is going to be gorgeous! Enjoy every aspect with having it built!

Jim ManionI hear you!
Kind of like just taking it out occassionally just to keep the batteries charged after making sure that is what you wanted before you bought it - checking it out bumper to bumper, opening it up to see what it was capable of, and test driving it to the point that you are convinced you have to have it.
Like marriage.

OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}
Peter Hoffer's guns are amazing. I don't know him, I found his website by accident a few months ago.
About 10 years ago, I got a phone call at 3 in the morning from Johann Fanjoy (spelling). I had sent him an email asking about the gunmakers school in Ferlach. Johann called me personally and then went down the street to the school and had them send me a package.
Unfortunatly for me it was all in German, and I lost it. But I will never forget the act of kindness.
I am going to take most of the month of September and travel Germany and Austria this year. I am looking forward to going to both Suhl and Ferlach and meeting the makers.
The rifle Peter made called skulpture is amazing. I am sure your big double in the tiger hunt theme will be the same.
You know it's funny about weather, the snow and cold doesn't bother me at all. The minuite it gets over 70 I am bitching like crazy.
I would love Hawaii at 50, I would have the place to myself. I have been there many times, I am in the Navy and went to Vietnam to dig up MIAs in 2002. I spent 3 weeks in Hawaii for pre-deployment training with the VA and Task Forsk Full Acounting.
Not my cup of tea, but it's nice for a vacation.
I retire in 6 years and I will only be 41. I might still go to the school in Ferlach.

308SakoHaving had the extreme pleasure of viewing Mr Hoffer's fine firearms and having some personal genetic roots to the Schwartzwald it can only be said that there is nothing else even close in this galaxy.

IMO there are much better Gun Makers in Ferlach than Peter Hofer.
Like Scheiring, Hauptmann, Hambrusch...but the are not that famous in USA because the are not going to the SCI, Shot Show etc. The sell mostly there guns in Russia.
