graybirdCustoms Power of Attorney?
I would like to get some of your thoughts (good/bad) regarding hiring a brokerage service giving them customs power of attorney.
I just got back from my first safari in South Africa and still playing the learning game.

David WGraybird,
The POA is limited and only authorizes the broker to act as your agent in dealing with US Customs, Fish and Wildlife, etc. The POA is a legal requirement and any entity, whether an individual or corporation, that engages the services of a Customs broker must sign one.
I don't have an opinion on whether you should/shouldn't hire a broker. I've always used one, but others here prefer to clear their own trophies. If you do work with a broker, make sure the individual who clears your trophies is experienced with clearing them and in dealing with USF&W. Just because the guy can clear carpets from Bangladesh doesn't mean he knows how to get you trophies cleared.
It all boils down to money.
A broker is going to cost $250 - $400 + shipping from the POE (me, typically ~$400) to you. Since Chicago is the closest to me, let's see...gas, 3 - 5 nights at the hotel (maybe more depending on how busy USF&WS might be), etc., etc.
Cheaper to get a broker.
