Zimbabwe: Underfunding Poses Nightmare for Gonarezhou Perimeter FenceMasvingo Bureau — The erection of a perimeter fence around the giant Gonarezhou National Park to curb the spread of foot and mouth disease has stalled owing to shortage of funding.
This has left cattle belonging to villagers in nearby areas at the risk of contracting foot and mouth disease. Buffaloes transmit the disease.
The Parks and Wildlife Management Authority started erecting the perimeter fence five years ago.
Parks public relations manager Ms Caroline Washaya-Moyo on Monday said shortage of funding was hampering progress.
She said there was need to bring in partners to complete the project.
"The issue of the spreading of foot-and- mouth from buffaloes to cattle around the Gonarezhou National Park requires a holistic approach involving all the key stakeholders including the parks authority, the Veterinary Department and others," she said.
There has been a significant increase in the number of villagers staying around the Gonarezhou National Park, which is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, raising fears of the swift spread of foot and mouth from the mixing of wildlife and cattle.

Bwana BundukiThe cable fencing that has surrounded the park for years has been a magnificent source of snare material for years. Not to mention most of it has been trampled by elephants. Be careful what you wish for.

Bingo. Yeah, put up a fence for free snares. How stupid, or smart, are these guys?

zimFrostyit also fails to mention the fact that huge funding has already gone into the park from the Frankfurt zoo and other benefactors....some of that has been directed at anti poaching and perimeter security. Has it been used correctly....
