Any opinions on this area for buffalo? Most interested in abundance. It is my first trip so 44" will be sufficient. Wink

Also, any opinion on plains game which is secondary.

Thanks

if you require a 44" buff to be satisfied, i am afraid you are setting yourself up for disappointment. that is a DAMN big buffalo and you may well come home empty handed. if you don't mind a young soft bossed bull, then 44"is a little more doable but still not easy to find. just go with the flow, enjoy the experience, and take what the hunting gods send you. best of luck. jerry

els,

I'm thinking about a buff hunt there next year. What was it like? (Camp, number of buffalo, other species, etc.)?

Tsibindi,
The originator of this thread asked for info on an area you say you have spent +- 300 days and all you do is challenge someone elses opinion? Sounds like you could give Tsibindi some good info on the area so why don't you?

Good hunting!

You need to be thinking that any hard bossed old bull would be a trophy. Consider anything at least 36". And dream about 38" or over. You might not even see a 38" bull.

Oldcoyote...

Since you've already booked, I'll add my two cents.

As previously stated, I've spent 300+ days in Gokwe, both North, and South.

As to buffalo in Gokwe, I've personally shot four, and my wife has shot two. Sizes: 37", two 38", 39", 41", and 43". I've been in attendance when several (8)other bulls have been taken. The smallest, 35", was an ugly 'ol dugaboy with gnarley horns and a huge boss, and the largest was 45" green scored.

I was in Gokwe almost three weeks this last October. While there, two clients each took buffalo. One was a smidge over 38", and the other client shot his bull the day I left, and I didn't hear the size.

Virtually all my time in Gokwe last year was working, mostly baiting for lion, and building hides. Consequently, I wasn't overly aware of plains game, however, I did see kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, impala, grysbok, zebra and hyena. In past years, there have been eland, and sable in the area as well. You'll more than likely see elephant while hunting buffalo. There are a lot of elephant!

I'll be leaving for Zim the 20th of Mar, and will be in Gokwe for about four weeks. If your hunt is in that time-frame, I'm sure we'll meet around the "African TV", and enjoy a sundowner.

If you should have any questions, just e-mail me, and it'll be my pleasure to answer them.

Good hunting

I hunted Gokwe with Kirk Mason (Dudley Rogers PH) in June of 2006. Took a hard bossed 36" bull. There were a bunch of buff. We were on a couple bigger than that, but this is the one I took (I was focused on elephant). The camps there are beautiful, but not palacial. Are you hunting with Tshabezi?

I dare say, if you focused on buff, you should be able to shoot a hard bossed bull over 38". I also shot a leopard, warthog and bushbuck. There are plenty of baboon, diker, bushbuck, warthog, impala, waterbuck, some kudu and a few lion. I can highly recommend the place.

Yes, Tshabezi. I am going to have a good time regardless of buffalo size. Above comments are appreciated.
