One of the Stu Taylor threads reminds me of something that has been on my mind. Don't you find it odd that the names of the clients involved in some of these incidents this year has not leaked out? Particularly the Owain Lewis incident.

Having heard directly from some of the people involved, I can't imagine their behavior nor keeping the name under wraps.

In my experience, the professionals are the soul of discretion. Who hasn't had an episode on safari where our shooting, hunting ability, or behaviors were perhaps suboptimal? While our PH's may tell stories, no names are mentioned where it might embarrass our fellow hunters.
It seems part of their ethic.

Larry the report of this type if incident is required by law to the authorities with names but there is an unwritten rule that the names of clients connection to such happenings is not made to the general public by the safari companies. It is considered talking out of school. The one that was made public was Boddington's doughter, but made public by the Boddingtons themselves.

On the subject of simple bad behavior by a client is where this first started. The behavior may have simply been reported without naming the client to make it known to potential clients that the type of behavior was frowned on by safari companies and PHs. If this were made public many of the most known clients would have to find another passtime! We all know very wealty people who are real A-holes when dealing with what they consider to be employees! I fear much revenue to the safari companies would be lost if these people were ridiculed in a public forum!

Have any of you actually heard a PH use the phrase, "Still drinking the client's whiskey?", or is it just something that looks good in print?

Disclosing names would not help the situation, only cause extra pain on the already pained client. Just not the right thing to do, thus it was not.

I think my post may be misunderstood. I am not saying I think they names should have been released. I am surprised they have not leaked out, particularly with the number of outside parties that know the details.

I hunted with Owain's tracker, Kynosh, a month after the tragedy. I never inquired but was informed. The episode revealed the character of those individuals involved. Some were exemplary and two, not one, were distasteful. That is human nature. However, I would believe that it is in no one's interest, especially the PH's, to disparage anyone. If a PH were to disclose such information who would hunt with him or his outfit thereafter? What I took away from this was the great testaments to Mr. Lewis' life and the quick thinking of those involved. Just my 2 cents worth.

LOL, Matt! The phrase is supposed to mean that the client is a complete jerk, but the PH can still drink on the client's dime. I hunted out of Mwanja, Owain's camp, three weeks after his death. Some things were said, and much more was not. I understand that the client was a European national, and allegedly unable to withstand the rigors of the followup, but his son did. Also, the client is said to have asked for another PH, so he could finish his safari. Despicable! I absolutely agree that even in extremis, PH/client confidentiality should be maintained.
