EXPRESSSaeed and the .577 T-Rex
I was just wondering, Saeed, if you've ever used the .577 T-Rex on game...
Should be DEVESTATING and can't be much fun to shoot at the bench...

SaeedEXPRESS,
No sir I haven't, and wouldn't even dream of it.
A friend used it, and wasn't too impressed with its performance.

I think Las Vegas Eric took one on Safari, but as I recall was unimpressed.
I would like to hear from him as well. It sure punishes the shooter if nothing else! ![[Eek!]](images/icons/shocked.gif)

Ulrik HentzerEvery cartridgecombination can fail if you are unlucky (and as far as remember LVEric used a "squib-load" of only 2300 f/s...). But I have used the 577 T-rex with utmost satisfaction.I must admit that I so far have only shot two animals with it: Shot a buffalo with a (single) Dead Tough SP bullet. Went through the buffalo on a quatering shot - entrance through last rib and lodged under the skin in the shoulder/neck junction.
Also shot a BIG bodied elephant (estimated weight of around 6500 kg..). A heart shot went straigt through him with a Woodleigh 750 grs solid. A one-shot kill and the elephant only walked 2-3 meters before collapsing. The PH had NEVER seen anything like that...
I am so satisfied that I have ordered a custom rifle builded on a super magnum mauser action as the A-Square rifle was not perfect in my opnion..

500grainsI suspect that Ulrik is correct that a squib load is responsible for LV Eric's poor experience with the 577 Ty. If I recall (and I would like to rely on LV Eric for an accurate recitation of the details), he shot an ellie in the head with the 577 Ty using a solid at close range, but the bullet penetrated less than a foot. That experience is not consistent with the experience of others who have shot game with a .585 diameter 750 grain bullet. I have shot only 2 animals with that combiantion, and at 2250 fps the penetration was good and the game was quickly down and out. Perhaps a defective primer caused LV Eric's powder to incompletely ignite. Or perhaps rain or humidity affected the powder. Or possibly human error in loading the cartridge explains it. All of these seem unlikely, but since we cannot go back in time and chronograph the cartridge in question, we are left to speculate.

GeorgeSThe .577NE has a tremendous reputation for penetration, and it propels its 750gr. bullet at 'only' 2050fps.
I am surprised that a .585/750gr. solid bullet at 2300fps wouldn't penetrate well.

Bwana-beThis goes to show that you never know what that one bulelt will do when it leaves the barrel THIS TIME.
That's even IF you get the shot right.
But if I had to choose between various bullets of the same consturction, going about the same speed, I'd go with the biggest I could handle. Simple physics.

<JOHAN>Gentlemen
I read a article by Ross Seyfried. He has classed the 577 caliber as crushers. The 750 grainer or heavier would penetrate like crazy.
The only trouble is shooting with the 577 t-rex, a first class flincher

OverkillUlrik!
So you are going to have a new rifle in .577 Tyrannosuar?
Why not a .600 Overkill-3?
Are you going to sell your A-square rifle to Per577 now?
//OK

Ulrik Hentzeroverkill!!
I have already sold the Hannibal to Per...
I want the 577 Tyrannosaur because I have a lot of brass, dies etc etc etc AND because I like the caliber and I can shoot it well. Maybe a 600 OK 3 in the future - who knows..

OverkillUlrik!
How does Per like his new big bore? does he have any tools so he can reload?

N'gagiUlrik,
You have a PM

LV EricIt was me. I shot a ele cow twice on a frontal brain shot during a full charge. The first shot was low and hit the elephant in the mouth area, we recovered the bullet a 750 barns in the thoat. the second shot went just under the brain and we recovered the bullet at the back of the skull. It was a small tuskless cow elephant with a small skull. It would have penetraited enough to brain it had I hit the brain. It was my first charge, I was jet lagged out and was my first big animal, therefore I was a newby. But the performance was terrible the elephant didnt go flying on its ass like one might think. My PH was getting the same physical response when he was hitting non-vital shots with his 450 Ackley.
The ammo was loaded by one of our members here and was very reliable unlike the factory stuff. I had 6 or 7 different loads from him that werer all good. I chronographed the load that I shot the ele with and it was hot enough. I dont remember the numbers anymore. The only reasonable explanation is that at 25 yards the bullet wasnt stablized enough, hence the poor penetration. That is a weak argument too. It should have been fine, it will go down in history as one of those things that cant be explained.
I might take it back next week and shoot a couple buff's with it and see what happens.
BTW I have shot 5 elephants perfectly with my 375 since the 577 mess and wouldnt consider any other gun.

LV EricI cant remember the velocity or the exact load I used. All the rounds were color coded and we used a hot one. I posted the numbers along time ago and will stand behind what I posted. I dont want to make anything up. Its been over a year since I posted that info I'll try and look it up.
It could be that they just wernt hot enough but I dont remember that being the case. I know Mitch had them going something like 2600fps with a 26" barrel. My barrel is 24".
Here is an old thread I found probably more accurate as my memory is slipping, just a bit
http://www.nookhill.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002073 As far as recoil goes, I didnt feel a thing. The adrenelin takes care of that.
