<Hunter Formerly Known As Texas Hunter>Lott Load for Cape buffalo
I plan to hunt Cape Buffalo this fall using my .458 Lott RSM. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use Hornady ammo : inter-bond and Hornady solids?

500grainsNope.
If you want to maximize penetration and wound channel with solids, consider some flat noses from North Fork, Bridger or GS Custom.
If you want to maximize penetration with an expanding bullet, consider a North Fork cup nose solids.

formerflyerNo problem with the Hornady ammo. Reloading would let you choose a different bullet, but the Hornady factory stuff will work just fine as well.

invader66If You do not handload, Federal 458 lott will
out this summer with a flat nose solid.
http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Search.aspxI have heard the RSM can have feeding issues
with flat nose but have not run any through mine
so I do not know.

<Hunter Formerly Known As Texas Hunter>Yes, I was wondering about feeding the flat nosed rounds when working the action in a big (frantic?) hurry.

invader66The Federal dose not look as flat as some. Seems a bit more rounded. Might work better
pin the RSM.

Michael RobinsonI would call the Federal Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer solid a truncated ogive flat nose. Same as the Barnes Banded FN solid. These bullets have an ogive (or somewhat rounded profile) ahead of the shank that terminates in a small, flat meplat.
I have bolt rifles that will feed the Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer solids without a problem, but that will not feed the North Fork, which I would call a truncated cone flat nose (i.e., a truly conical bullet ahead of the shank that terminates in a wide, flat meplat).
But to answer your original question, I have shot buff with the Hornady solid and soft nosed bullets in the .458 Lott (even the old Interlock soft, which was not bonded), and they worked just fine.

retreeverTH contact Mike Brady at North Fork bullets and he will give you some of his cup points to try and see how they work....
My Ruger would have an occasional hang up from only one side of the magazine..

Think North Fork sells sample packs of bullets.

jstevensSee the above post(biggest bores). You don't need a .458 Lott, a .22 Savage is adequate and won't be so heavy to carry.
