Maybe this subject has been addressed before and if so then it is targeted for the new members.
I have just returned from camp and in the depths of a bookshelf was the book 'Nyati' which in most Zimababwe dialects is the word for 'Buffalo'. I flicked through it and initially was not too impressed. I thought the photographs were not great and the layout not much better. It was also quite difficult to determine who wrote it?
Having now read it I am of the opinion it is one of the finest writings of the hunting of Buffalo I have ever come across.
If you plan to hunt Buffalo in Africa I would add this to my list of essentials and wear it on your belt. For me it was an education.
I did not note the publisher but it was produced by African Hunter and contributed by a number of respected professional hunters in Zim.

Use Enough GunGreat book, along with, "Ndlovu, The Art Of Hunting The African Elephant". Both published by African Hunter Magazine.

Michael RobinsonI think that, as fairgame says, it was written by several authors and compiled and published by the publisher of African Hunter magazine. I bought my copy from them several years ago.

Just a couple of yeas ago they were available from several sources in the US. The only reasonably priced copy I can find now is at Rowland Ward - listed at $55.00. Used copies are listed on other book sites for $200 +

Use Enough GunMight try contacting African Hunter Magazine or Safari Press. Hey, I think that our own Bill Quimby on AR works with African Hunter Magazine here in the States. You might PM him and see if he knows how you can get copies of the books.

umshiniwamI think Kevin "Doctari" Robertson might have been one of the main contributors of "Nyati". You must also read his book "Africa's Most Dangerous". It must be the encyclopaedia of hunting the African Buffalo. I have unfortunately not read "Nyati" so I cannot compare the two.

My bad. I thought Kevin had written another book before "Africa's Most Dangerous" and assumed that this was it.

Gerrypeters375I always thought that "nyati" was a Zulu word only. ( I had Zulu trackers in Zimbabwe (back in '93) so maybe they were prejudiced!

I seem to read this time and time again. I don't get it, have you not read Mahohboh by Ron Thomson?
Richard Harland is one cool guy and all of his books are great, but Ndlovu can't hold a candle to Thomson's when it comes to information. It's not even close.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.
Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

GanyanaEmail fishunt@zol.co.zw or Zimbi books in SA...
Umshiniwam- Kevins first book was a little paperback called Inyathi-Hunting the southern Buffalo, printed by mag-set publications (same as Nyati and Ndlovu)- sadly a personal clash between Kevin and the publisher killed it and it has been out of print (and will remain so= for many years.

That's your opinion, (to which you are entitled), I just happen to disagree with it.

I seem to remember that I bought mine from "Rowland Ward' whilst I was in J'Berg.
Check out their website, no problem with mail order, they do it very well.
Cheers,

fairgameJBrown,
I have not read Thomson's book but did read Ndlovu which I regard a little more than a comprehensive manual to hunting elephant. Some books are just too detailed but Nyati was delightful, informative and yet easy to read.
The varying accounts of renowned professionals is a lot more refreshing than some wannabe spouting off self opinions.
Is Mahohboh published by Safari press?
Cheers

Zig MackintoshAndrew,
You can read a bit of a Bio about Ron Thomson here
http://www.safarinewsreel.com/blog/?page_id=20 There are also details on how to contact Ron, his books are self-published. Ron also has a blog on the Safari Newsreel website. He has a very interesting angle on wildlife conservation.

...indeed- which is why he left Zimbabwe in a hurry with a warrant for his arrest for stealing eagles and vulture eggs!
It was a white parks research officer, Dr Peter Mundy who got the police onto him, and his little extra income scam.
(I have NEVER understood people who collect rare birds eggs...but then, there are many things I do not understand!!!)
