Rsm458LottTake Down Regular Bolt Rifle For Travel
Does anyone do this? I'm thinking of trying this with my 375 on an upcoming trip so I can use a smaller travel case to avoid possible oversize baggage charges.

SOUTHPAWHUNTERI have on both of my trips to Africa. I used a Pelican 1700 case. It's a lot easier to handle than a full size double rifle case.

MJines. . . just another one of the joys of using a double.

butchlocall it takes i to remove 2 guard screws - sighting may change a bit but you check that anyway

buckeyeshooterI do have 3 takedowns that I use for travel. None are a bolt rifle. I am one of the throwbacks who likes to use a lever action. I have a Winchester 92 in 44-40, an 1886 in 45/70 and an 1895 in 30-06. They all take down to about brief case size. With open or peep sites you do not need to worry very much with zero change during travel.

10generationDo you guys bring a torque wrench with you when breaking down a bolt rifle? If so, any kind that is compact, works well?
I think americase will make a case for a break down bolt rifle. They do one for Brown Precision - pretty nice.

470EDDYMy preference is the double/takedown in an aluminum case in the base compartment of my roll on duffel...one bag does it all. You do have to be careful to put your ammo in a shippable/lockable container for SA where they must be separated. For ammo I use a nice Red Ace Hardware lockable mechanics tool box...very light, handles up to 4 boxes of big ammo, under the shippable max of 11lbs...and can be checked separately if country requires.

cal pappasA double will fit in a shorter case but I travel with a long case so I can bring back more crap (carvings, etc.). In my single barrel days (1990s) used a takedown Cogswell and Harrison .375 H&H and did the same (hint: it's for sale). I believe airlines allow sporting equipment as oversize without additinal charges. At least my gun case has never been surcharged.

One of Saeed's favorite rifles; a Blaser R 93 in a Pelican 1700 case AND a Thompson/Center handgun in the same case AND if the rules permit, there is still room for ammo AND some small tools.
In addition, unlike a double or a lever action, the R 93 is good for a 400 yard shot. Or, if you don't have something against single shots, a Thompson/Center Encore is capable of just as good accuracy.

Heym 450/400
The answer to your question..Yes, I used to take the stock off and travel with a smaller case. I used a Snap-On torque driver to tighten the bolts back up. It worked well enough until I went with a Blaser.

billrquimbyI did it twice: to Spain with a 7mm Rem Mag for red stag and boar, and to New Zealand with a .257 Roberts for everything from feral goat to tahr and chamois.
Both times, point of impact hadn't changed when I re-assembled the rifles.
In Spain, I was happy I had a short gun case. Guys in our group who had long gun cases had to strap their cases on top of the little cars that transported us to our hunting areas.

bcassTake a look at the Merkel Helix. I travel with it in an Americase often in the bottom of a duffle bag. It doesn't require any tools to take apart or assemble. The nice thing is your gun case will come out with your baggage not in a special section of the airport for large luggage. You can also change barrels and magazines quickly in the field if needed.

Austin HunterI have a M03 with 2 barrels and 2 scopes that fit nicely in a Pelican 1700. With that said, if I'm only shooting one cartridge on a trip I put it fully assembled in a soft case in my 1750 case with my shooting sticks, pistol, and as much other stuff as I ca fit in there.

BearCountry953I never get charged for over sized gun cases. I take my Storm case with 2 bolt actions and a shotgun in it...and I say they comply with firearms regulation for their airline and never a charge.

Rsm458LottDoes anyone know if a 26" barrel M70 will fit in the 1700 case taken down?

StonecreekI think many responses miss the poster's point: He is questioning if it is useful to take apart a
conventional bolt rifle, not a take-down style rifle, in order to transport it in a shorter case.
First, it is typically no problem to re-assemble the rifle and zero will change hardly at all with most.
But surprisingly, the "length" savings is very modest. The stock only adds about 12 inches to most rifles (the distance from the butt plate to the rearmost metal on the action.) The "savings" is even smaller if there is a scope attached to the barreled action.
Considering that the case for a "broken down" conventional bolt rifle can only be about twelve inches shorter than one for an intact rifle,
and that it would be very difficult to get a second rifle into a "short" case, it seems that bothering to break down a conventional rifle is hardly worth the effort.

AtkinsonI consider it a cute concept, but the salvation of a non problematic idea, and the concept of switch barrels is more absurb..
I always take two guns anyway, and hey in Africa it wouldn't surprise me if airline and customs were to steal half a gun!!

Rsm458LottI received my Pelican 1700 and started cutting the foam for my rifle. I ordered the backup scope I'm taking today,a 2.5 x 8 x 36 VX3i with the B&C reticle. As soon as it arrives I will cut out a place for it.
The case fit my :
-My M70 26" barrel 7mm Remington Mag with 2.5 x 10 x 32 Nightforce
-Driver for reassembley
-Back-up scope
-Sling
I think it's going to turn out pretty good.
