Hartman Zebra & CITES
Confused Can the Hartman Zebra be imported into the US from Namibia? Do they require a CITES permit? If so is one permit good for a Zebra and a Leopard or do they require a seperate permit (and fee)? Thanks in advance. Art

The Hartman's Zebra may be imported into the U.S. The permit is issued by officials in Namibia. There is no fee involved, just documentation.

The Leopard permit needs to be issued by U.S. officials, as the Leopard is on a different CITES Appendix. I believe the Leopard permit needs to be issued to the hunter prior to the hunt.

Art,

To make it simplier you personally do nothing as far as the Hartmann's is concerned. For the leopard you personally have to apply for an import permit with USF&W. Your taxidermost should have the appropriate forms for application.

Smiler Many thanks to those who responded. Can someone point me to the loaction in the regulations that states I must have the permit before hunting. The reason I ask this is my contact with Coopersmith told me not to apply for a permit until after I return to save the $100. fee if I am not sucessful. Thanks again, I am printing the form as I type this question.

My understanding on Leopard is that you do not need to apply until you know you will import it, which may keep you from having to get an extension if it is issued before the trip and expires before importation. But some countries may not want to issue the license or export permit until they see you have an import permit, so you may want to check with PH or booking agent.

You could also check with your taxidermist.

Someone please feel free to disagree with me as this was my understanding last year.

wave Thanks Charles for that perspective. I will contact my PH and see what he says. I had one last year but alas, no Leopard. Sent the permit back as required. When I talked to the agent in San Francisco about collecting the '05 trophys and delivering them to the tannery, I asked about the CITES for this year and he told me to wait, that there was always enough time to get one after I get back since most trophies don't arrive for several months after the hunt. I will contact Dirk for his opinion or experience. Thanks again to all, learning a little bit every day, Art
