Hunting shows do a great disservice to hunters. They ALWAYS miscommunicate what hunting is about. No wonder the general public thinks modern hunting equipment is unfair to game animals. Hunting shows give the impression all you and to do is go out in the woods and in 30 minutes bag a trophy animal.

The hours, days, weeks, even years it frequently takes to tag a desirable animal is not remotely understood when presented via a hunting show. I too am proud of my accomplishment and get excited when I take an animal. But when that pride and excitement is divorced from the work, struggle, frustration, and frequent failure; it seems little more than unwarranted bloodlust--and that is the impression hunting shows leave.....

A couple of thoughts -

Tony Makris does a good job of under talking rather than over talking. He is a solid guy on these shows.

The other was a couple of pilot shows I saw of Jeff Neal. Jeff is a agent and has hunted everywhere and taken nearly everything. He did a pilot show of a Lord Derby hunt a couple years ago that I saw. Virtually no dialogue, just he and the guide tracking, stalking and shooting. It was as real as I have seen.

Hit him in the "pump house" or "pump station".

"Shot looked good", when it was clearly gutshot... usually followed shortly by "we're gonna back out and leave him until morning".

"Smoked him!!!"

"That's what I'm talkin bout".

"Who's your daddy?"

I can say I've watched 2 shows an the same time.
First and last.
I was aghast at the way people acted and what they said. I watched someone do some stupid commentary and tell the audience "Do as I say, not as I do", then look like a NFL jackass in the end zone after a touchdown once they killed their quarry.

Not entertaining, not informative, not worth my time.

We only get one hunting show on free to air here in Australia and its a bloody Kiwi show Roll Eyes. Actually its pretty good, its called Hunting Aotearoa http://www.huntingaotearoa.com/

They are a pretty laid back bunch with no outlandish crap that you guys have mentioned.

While there are some great huntresses out there, who BTW can also out-hunt me, I guess my biggest beef, is the supposed great hunter host who eventually gets his wife hunting and she starts giving advice on television when it is obvious there is truly a lack of experience.

And then - his children (male or female) are featured on a show based around a hunt and are talking as though they are professionals.

My impression is these gentlemen have the finances to "buy" their show and family face time on the air, instead of earning it.

Amen!

I hear so much whining about the "hunting community" (translation: big five hunters) getting their asses hunted to them and the rest of the hunters not rallying to the fight. Outdoor Life's and this board's response is to provide further evidence of what most people already think which is Africa hunting is for a bunch of elitist rich guys. I know a whole lot more men and women, some hunters and some not, who know T-Bone than have ever heard of Accurate Reloading. That may be because I am a southern hunter born and raised and anyone don't like it they can kiss my hairy white ass.

I don't care much for the hunting shows or TV in general (never owned one until I was given my first VCR), but bashing hunters that are different from you makes you anti-hunters best weapon.

Any of the shows involving Crossbows, especially the shows I've seen hunting in Africa.

Also the shows pushing long range shooting. I saw one idiot shoot a black bear at over 900 yards. When they walked up to the bear, they were surprised to see how small it was. Idiots!!

I go back to the sixties and seventies in reading OL, SA, F&S, etc. Back then everything was a "bonanza" or "cornucopia". Now it is "of a lifetime". I hate this because it implies that you are never going to do it (hunt, safari, deer, trophy, shot, etc.) again. So why not just quit hunting?!

Most importantly though, lists are the lazy editor's way of filling space - or their way of not paying for good writing! I ignore them because they are boring, repetitive and usually aimed at selling gear.

I find it just about impossible to watch any of the hunting shows that I have available on the 2 channels I get with Dish. When I do give one a try, it's because of the animal they are after and I'm hoping to see some footage of that animal and it's habitat. I absolutely HATE hearing them talk. I realize that there needs to be some commentary, but I don't believe anything coming out of their mouths. Probably the worse are the old time magazine writers, they are just painful to listen to and I tend to mute the TV.

I agree with everyone saying the commentary and music is more like a fan video of a guy's favorite football/nascar team and could be done without. It makes the hunt seem like a drinking party sports event - which I don't believe it should be.

If the show was just here is what we are hunting, this is the equipment we are using, here is us getting to the animals, here is the final stalk and shot, and here is what will happen to the animal now that it has been killed - I'd be happy. Some little anecdotes about the local culture for foreign hunts or conservation info on the animal being hunted is also nice. I like facts.

My pet peeve is the misuse of "species" and "specie."

For example, someone will say: "There are six species of North American deer -- Rocky Mountain mule deer, desert mule deer, Columbia black-tailed deer, Sitka black-tailed deer, white-tailed deer, and Coues deer."

Wrong! There are only two species (mule deer and white-tailed deer) listed above. All the others are subspecies or "races." The six species of North American deer are: mule deer, white-tailed deer, moose, elk, caribou, and brocket deer.

Or someone might say, "This is one tough specie to hunt" or "He needs just one more sheep specie for a Grand Slam."

Wrong again."Species" is both plural and singular. "Specie" refers only to money, specifically coins.

It is particularly disturbing when I see the words misused in magazines whose editors and copyreaders should know better.

Goat (for pronghorn)

DRT (Dead right there)
Spikie (spike buck)
Klippie (for klipspringer)

Plus all the other juvenile monikers derived by substituting an acronym, or shortening the word, or adding an "ie" or "y."

And then there are the guys who sit in elevated, covered blinds while wearing the latest in camouflage togs and face paint. What do they do after they're fired a shot or released an arrow? Most continue to whisper.

Then there is "tree rat" for squirrel.

For moose there is "swamp donkey."

The phrase "he's down!"

The idiots with that little rubber thingy on the barrel that's supposed to tune it.

Then there is all that other junk that you supposedly can't live without being recommended by the "expert" host.

I hate a nice scene spoiled by rock music.

There was some novelty in it for awhile, but it got a bit old when every other show had to have some girl hunting or if not that some disabled person. Yes, I'm not at all against disabled hunters and I applaud their efforts but a "blind" guy shooting? Really?

I haven't watched a hunting show in a long time. The deer hunting shows were the first to go.

I remember Dana Browns shows when I was a 70's kid

It was corny but entertaining....it had 2 sponsors neither were hunting products

But the 90's era hunting shows were created for hunting product sales

The first modern regular 1/2 hour TV show I can remember was hosted by Jackie Bushman on TNN..selling memberships

Bill Jordan was also on TNN.....selling his camo brandname

ect ect ect

Then came the hunting networks

Has the 1/2 hour hunting show bonanza helped or hurt hunting

This might be a good question to ask the AR community

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

Yup, you're probably right. Apologies to Mr. young. Suffering from an overload on many hunting forums. especially this one, of hunters attacking hunters, outfitters going after outfitters, hunters and outfitters going after each other etc. Lost my sense of humor for a minute when it seemed like the last potential victims, the TV hunters, were about to get it as well. While funny as hell, seemed wrong for the time somehow. Hope it turns out to be a good idea for Outdoor Life, they need it.
