When I lived in Houston, I was a member of the Pearland Shooting Club,
http://www.psc-range.com/It's also a members only range and I think they might have a waiting list to join now, but they have good facilities and it generally was not crowded during the week and if you were the only one on the range, you were free to get in front of the benches and shoot off sticks, prone, etc. It's been three years or so since I've been there so don't know the current status.
I think the largest public range is American Shooting Center, west of town. It was pretty crowded the few times I went and I seriously doubt you could practice off of shooting sticks like you would want to for safari prep.
You might call around to some other smaller ranges to see if they would allow you to shoot positions other than from the bench.
Good luck.

mstarlingYou might check with the Texas City Municiple Range as well. Decent facility with decent costs. Not as nice as the American Shooting Center but less expensive too.
Was a member of a club in Pearland years ago. They had pretty restrictive rules because of the residential buildup around the range. Don't know if it is in the same place.

Flipper DudeDogcat,
I'm a member of Pearland Shooting Club. Nice facility, but members and guests only. My schedule is very hectic right now, but am in the process of getting ready for an August trip to Omay North area. Would be happy to host if we can work our schedules out. Club is about 30 - 45 minutes south of downtown. PM me if interested.

376 steyrCarter's country gun shop with rifle range was located just north of the Houston Intercontenental Airport(north Houston). I assume it's still there. Call "Carter's Country" they have a website.

Most bench shooting. Don't know if they let you do any "field position" shooting.
Pellet gun in the back yard can help too!
BTW what part of the Houston area are you located in? I think we've covered the whole of Harris County for public ranges though.

A second for Bayou Rifles, especially if you don't want to just shoot off a bench.
Another vote for Bayou Rifles. It is nothing fancy for sure but it is user controlled and generally not very crowded.

I will be there for a week or in June and hope to do some shooting. Thanks for the offers. I will be in touch.
My range is on the East Side
http://www.basctx.com/ and members only but I shoot there alot if you need to go out a couple of times shoot me a PM.
We can shoot rifles from 50 yards to 600 yards, field positions are fine.

Phoenixdawgamerican shooting centers has long range out to 600m if i remember correctly. I have shot of sticks out there for safari prep and had no issues. It is located in Katy.
Dogcat,
No promises, but when you get your travel plans solidified, let me know when you'll be in town and we'll see if we can make a plan to go down to Bayou Rifles for a day. I won't be able to go more than once during a week for sure, but some of the other members may be able to do the same.
