Mauser K98Looking For Information On A South Africa Plains Game Hunt
I have checked out Namibia for a plains game hunt and they seem to have a lot of "Bang For Your Buck".
This would be my first African hunt, so I want to check out South Africa also.
The reason for looking at South Africa, is the airlines. They go to or connect in Johannesburg, so why not stay and hunt in South Africa if the price is right.
The game I would like to hunt is Oryx, Springbuck, Impala and Zebra.
Some of the outfitters in Namibia I'm looking at are, Otjandaue Safaries, Omatako Hunting Trails and Gras Hunting Ranch. These outfitters have 7 day hunts and range from $6,000 to $7,000 for 4 animals, 1 X 1 and 1 observer in the field. Looking for something in this range in South Africa.
Thanks for any information.

graybirdI wouldn't hesitate to hunt with Andrew Renton again. Matter of fact, my hunting group plans on hunting with him again within the next year or two. Here is Andrew's website:
Kei River SafarisAndrew's U.S. based booking agent is Wade Derby who here posts on A.R. You can drop Wade a PM and he'll take good care of you!
Here is a my account of my hunt with Andrew.

pagosawingnutIn South Africa, you might check out Van Wyjk Safaris. Had a wonderful time hunting with him. He and his wife, Steffie are both PH's and love to hunt. Andre just loves to kill and be in on the kill and has some wonderful areas to hunt. Just my .02

GeorgeSCheck out the 'African Hunt Reports' forum. Instead of the puffery and blue sky promises you will receive from many booking agents and outfitters, you can get an idea of what is actually happening on people's hunts.

OldHandgunHunterSouth Africa is, in my humble view, the very best place on the continent to enjoy your first African hunt. The quality of the plainsgame is as good or better than anywhere else and prices can be very, very good -- and you avoid paying for a 2nd plane ride in and out of RSA.
There are lots of other great places to hunt, but why leave RSA for the first go?

LHowellMauser,
For an Eastern Cape, South Africa hunt I think you would be very happy with
Jimbah Safaris.
I have hunted with them several times and have never been disappointed.
See their web site, and see the hunt report [from AR] that I have done, as well as others.
I would be happy to chat about it anytime!

Mad DogHere is who we hunted with, in 2008.
www.cruisersafaris.com/We had a great time and they have a 10 day/6 animal pkg. that is excellent. Do a search on cruiser safaris, and you will find many excellent reports on their operation.

impala#03Take a look at Madubula Safaris in South Africa. They hunt very large concessions and are first class.

StonecreekThere is great plains game hunting in both places. I chose Namibia for my first hunt largely because it was a bit less expensive and the country has a reputation of being tourist- and hunter-friendly.
If you do a "farm" hunt, as the bulk of hunting in both countries is, then Namibian hunting farms are typically larger on average than S.A. hunting farms. You may have to hunt several farms in S.A. for different game, whereas Namibian farms are typically large enough to offer a fuller range of game on a single property. There are execptions, of course, but this is the norm.
For example, the farm I hunted in Namibia had almost 200
square miles (50,000 hectares) in a single block, whereas many S.A. hunting farms may be only a couple of thousand hectares, or even smaller.
Insofar as transportation, you can fly to Windhoek via Europe and avoid Tembo airport in Johannesburg -- a place that is infamous for bureaucracy, red tape, long waits, and rampant theft.
I'm in no way discouraging or dissing a hunt in S. A. and would gladly do one myself, but at the moment, I believe Namibia holds the advantage for plains game.
BTW: Don't look for the "package" hunts with X number of days and X number of animals of A,B,C,and D species. When you pencil it out, if you'll simply pay the daily rate (which usually includes everything but the trophy fees), then shoot the animals that you want, you'll come out just as good financially and have more flexibility in what you hunt. You may find that your host will discount, or even comp you a head or two, if you're shooting (buying) quite a bit of his game.

If you can spare the time, I would recommend attending the Dallas Safari Club convention in January or the SCI convention in Las Vegas in February. You'll get to meet the outfitters in person which is much better than just a website. And you just may pick up a great deal.

jens poulsenI can recommend Andrew McLaren Safaris.
Here you will enjoy true free-range hunting either on the grassveld or the bosveld. Andrew do not enjoy highfenced hunting and wants his clients to hunt natually as the game appear on the range.
I have hunted 2x with Andrew operations and never felt once a canned hunt or put & take.
Andrew can offer canned hunts where the hunter is driven around a 4x4 in high fence and the hunter won`t get walk more than 100 yards for a potshot if that is on the menu.

Mauser98,
I just booked my first African hunt in SA. I'll be going in April. 8 day hunt.
Kudu, Zebra, Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, and Warthog for $7,000 all inclusive. So far, I will be the only hunter in camp. Another hunter would reduce the dailys a bit, and it would be nice to have some company.
I have recommendations on this outfitter from 5 different SCI members that have used him on multiple occasions. Plains game only.
