Counterfeit permits

1. This Notification is being published at the request of Zimbabwe.
2. The CITES Management Authority of Zimbabwe is informing Parties that they may be some
counterfeit permits in circulation which are alleged to have been issued by Zimbabwe’s CITES
Management Authority. The Management Authority of Zimbabwe therefore requests
Parties/Management Authorities to reach out to Zimbabwe when digital or scanned permits are
presented.
3. Zimbabwe issues CITES permits in physical form. No digital permits are in operation as yet. The
following are some of the key features to look at on the physical copy in addition to the official
signatories submitted to the CITES Secretariat.
a) Permit must be on security paper and not on ordinary bond paper.
b) When viewed against a light background some embedded security features should show.
c) Permit is printed on serialised paper with unique auto-generated coded serial numbers.
d) An original CITES seal/stamp must be affixed.
e) Permit is issued without alterations.
4. Only physical/hard copies should be recognised when releasing exports from Zimbabwe.
5. In addition, please be informed that communications from the email address “cites@zimpark.org” are not from the Zimbabwe CITES Management Authority and must be disregarded. If
any Party has received such communication, kindly inform Zimbabwe’s CITES Management
Authority on the official email address available on the CITES website.
