Ben Kotze has Doma see http://bigfivehq.com/ben.htm - great area for Sable and plains game; buff, elephant and lion also present but this is not a prime area for those species.

I think most outfitters in Zim require a minimum of 12 days for sable. With the loss of many of the game ranches in Zim, sable is getting harder to come by. So, it is not too early to start planning for a 2007 safari.

I hunted buffalo and sable with Swainson's Safaris last season. (I missed the shot on the sable.) Because this is a primarily a big game concession in the Zambezi Valley, you won't see a lot of plains game and will need to work for sable. I'm headed there again next week for a 12 day buffalo and sable safari.

You also might check with Charlton/McCallum Safaris as they seem to have a couple of areas where they offer sable.

Regards,

Terry

I filmed a hunt in the Doma area of Zimbabwe for sable in July of 2005. Cameron Hopkins of Surefire was hunting with Andrew Dawson (Chifuti Safaris). Once Cameron got his buffalo in the Zambezi Valley we drove to Doma and took this bull (If memory serves me correctly he measured 38"). We were into several good bulls each day and took this one on day three I believe. The camp was comfortable but I can't remember who ran it. Keep in mind this is the only sable hunt I was ever a part of but going by the number of bulls we glassed and stalked I would have to say it's a good area.

I had no idea until I saw one first hand how large these antelope are. They are truly a majestic animal the way the run and move about. I hope to get to hunt them myself someday.

I think there are good sable in several areas of Zim but to my knowledge the Forestry areas have the best chance for a really big one. There you can do a 10 day hunt but the daily fee is pretty high.

My son and I took nice sable in Dande North with HHK last year. We saw a dandy in HHK's Lemco conservancy while hunting plains game.

Talk to Mark Butcher of Matapula Safaris. I believe they have a pretty good web site. They have concessions in good Sable country. They are represented by Sporting International of Channeview, Texas. Tommy Morrison of SI is a straight shooter who will take good care of you.

Lemco has some nice sable, and a lot of them. We hunted 5 days before I took mine, but were in sable every day. It isn't a cattle shoot, but you will see them. I missed the opportunity on a very nice one on the second day, but was able to connect with this one on the fifth day (PH was Steve Brewer with HHK)

They are beautiful animals.

I'd second trying either Charlton-McCallum or HHK for a Zimbabwe sable. The most regal of all the antelope in my opinion. Wish there were more of them...and the trophy fees reflected that.

Don't forget about Zambia...there are some big bulls there...

Try Bushman Safaris at bushman@netconnect.co.zw He has an area in the Matetsi and I have seen some really nice 40+ Sable there. The only one I've taken was taken quite a few years ago in the Doma area . Very nice at 39" I believe. I gave the head to the PH I hunted with and he had it pedastel mounted. Looks nice. First pedastel mount i'd seen of one. Goes in a corner very nicely.

Was that the sable hunt featured in Tracks Across Africa?

We have seen a wonderful growth of Sable numbers and trophies in Mozambique over the last 10 years and herds of 40-50 animals are seen regularly. The number of loner bulls have also increased dramatically.

Not to mention that Sable has some of the best meat around as well!

Majestic antelope, Sable.
